Liverpool legend John Aldridge has claimed that Reds backup goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher is better than Giorgi Mamardashvili, who they have agreed to sign. The Georgian goalkeeper will leave the Mestalla Stadium in Valencia for Anfield in the summer of 2025.
Kelleher was called upon on numerous occasions last due to first-choice goalkeeper Alisson's injuries, and he impressed, making 26 appearances and keeping five clean sheets. This led to rumors that he could leave the club to find a starting berth elsewhere.
However, he opted to stay. In the summer, though, Liverpool turned towards Giorgi Mamardashvili to become Alisson's long-term replacement at Anfield.
This will likely force Caiomhin Kelleher out of the club if he wants to play regular football. However, John Aldridge is not pleased with the decision to sign Mamardashvili. He told Sunday World (via Tribal Football):
"Another player who can’t be allowed to leave in the January transfer window is Caoimhín Kelleher. I think Liverpool are making a mistake with their Ireland keeper as Kelleher is better than Georgian Giorgi Mamardashvili, who will arrive at Anfield next summer."
"Yet that signing is now done, so Kelleher will need to leave Liverpool next summer. Offers might also come in for him in January, but Liverpool need to keep their back-up keeper, as he has proved what an important part of their push for trophies he could be in the second half of the season."
Alisson has struggled with injures again this season, which has led to Kelleher playing regularly. He has made 13 appearances, keeping six clean sheets so far.
Reds head coach Arne Slot expressed his admiration for Tottenham Hotspur boss Ange Postecoglu ahead of the sides' Premier League clash on Sunday, December 22. They are also set to face each other in the Carabao Cup semi-finals.
Slot told the press (via Straits Times):
"I hope, hope, hope that he wins a trophy. Not the League Cup but I’m completely a fan of his team for the Europa League because people always talk about trophies, trophies, trophies, and that is so important."
"Now, for me, his brand of football, his style of football is so much more important and if he can combine it with something, that would be so good for football. Because then people can stop talking about too attacking or whatever. How on earth can you play too much attacking football?”
Liverpool secured a 6-3 win over Spurs at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in their Premier League fixture on Sunday.
