"Call me naive, but I believe I am the right guy at the right time" - Ruben Amorim on joining Manchester United
Manchester United head coach Rubem Amorim has boldly claimed he is the right choice to lead the club at this stage. The Portuguese tactician admitted that he would be called naive for claiming so, but was confident he could deliver at Old Trafford.
Speaking to the media for the first time as the Manchester United boss, Amorim claimed he was yet to figure out the biggest challenge at the club. He added that he believed in the players at his disposal to deliver for him. He said during a press conference (via The Guardian):
“Call me naive but I believe I am the right guy at the right moment. I could be wrong but the Earth still will turn, the sun will rise again. It doesn’t matter, I’m not worried about that. I truly believe I’m the right guy for this job. I really don’t know the biggest challenge [here] – I will find out during the next months. I’m a little bit of a dreamer, and I believe in myself, I also believe in the club.
"We have the same idea, the same mindset, so that can help, but I truly believe in the players also. I know you guys don’t believe a lot in these players. But I believe a lot. We have room to improve, I want to try new things. You guys think it’s not possible; I think it’s possible. We will see in the end.”
Ruben Amorim was addressing the media ahead of Manchester United's clash with Ipswich Town in the Premier League. The Red Devils are 13th in the league table, with 15 points from 11 matches.
Need more than 2 seasons to set things right at Manchester United, claims Ruben Amorim
Ruben Amorim said he would probably need more than just two and a half seasons to set things right at Manchester United. He is contracted to the club until 2027, but believes he will probably need longer than that to take the team where he wants to.
He said at the press conference:
“I have two years and a half. In two years you can understand if I am the right manager to go in this process. We will need more time – if you look at the clubs who are winning this league, they are doing this process for a long time. I understand we will need more than two and a half years. We have to win something, somewhere but in two years you can understand if you want to continue this part [with him] or change."
Manchester United appointed Rubem Amorim as the new head coach after sacking Erik ten Hag. The Dutchman was let go in October following a loss to West Ham United that left Manchester United struggling in the bottom half of the league table.
