Rio Ferdinand sees similarities in Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard's game to his former Manchester United teammate Michael Carrick. The Norweigan playmaker's importance to the Gunners has been highlighted by his recent spell out the team.
Arsenal were a completely different team without Odegaard, struggling for creativity without their talismanic skipper. Mikel Arteta's troops also suffered defeats to Bournemouth (2-0), Newcastle United (1-0), Inter Milan (1-0).
Odegaard, 25, returned from his lengthy spell on the sidelines in a 1-1 draw against Chelsea. His ball-playing abilities, vision and composure on the ball have helped turn things around for the north Londoners.
Ferdinand was asked to name one of his former Manchester United teammates who reminds him of Odegaard from a playing perspective. He told TNT Sports:
"It wasn't always to the eye that you could see it immediately but I think Michael Carrick was one of those players. A player you could give the ball to and close your eyes, knowing they'll keep it. They're always available, always wanting the ball no matter rain, sunshine, sleet, snow, it didn't matter he'd be there. That creates a comfort in the team."
Odegaard has been one of the Premier League's most entertaining midfielders since arriving at Arsenal in 2021. He's posted 35 goals and 27 assists in 159 games.
Carrick had a similar influence on Manchester United during his playing career. The Red Devils icon, now coaching Middlesbrough, was tidy in possession and kept things ticking in the middle of the park.
Odegaard was one of Europe's most highly coveted teenage talents in the summer of 2015. The now-Norway captain was flourishing in his homeland with Stromsgodset.
Real Madrid won the race to sign Odegaard, who joined the La Liga giants as a 16-year-old in a €2.8 million deal. Manchester United were one of the clubs in the race to sign the Arsenal skipper during his teen years.
Odegaard said regarding clubs interested at the time (via Manchester Evening News):
"I visited Liverpool, the two Manchester teams and they were all very nice. But my choice was Real Madrid and I am very happy with that. Madrid is very good. It is the best place if you want to become a better footballer."
Odegaard struggled to make a name for himself in Madrid and left for the Emirates, where he evolved into one of Europe's best playmakers. He's also taken on a leadership role with the Gunners.
Many feel United haven't replaced Carrick since his retirement in 2018. The Red Devils lack a holding midfielder who can control games like the former England international could.
