Alan Shearer has expressed concern over the future of Casemiro and Christian Eriksen at Manchester United. The Premier League Hall of Famer believes that the two midfielders do't fit into Ruben Amorim's system as they are too slow to press and lack energy.
Speaking on The Rest Is Football podcast, Shearer said that Amorim has a huge task at hand, and it is hard to judge players after just one match. However, he believes that the midfield duo cannot operate at the level the manager would want at Manchester United. He said (via Metro):
"He’s got a really big job on his hands and it’s going to take a lot of time. You can’t judge him after one game, he’s going to need the rest of the season to implement his style. They need new players in there, there’s no doubt, they need some more legs and improving in the forward positions. For a start he’s got an ageing midfield."
"He played Casemiro and Eriksen in there today, it would be nigh on impossible for those two to do what Amorim wants in terms of the pressing and the high energy and the running and everything else. He’s going to need this season so sort things out. They spend a lot of money in the summer but they’re not going to get the rewards for that. He will need the rest of the season to get things done, it’s going to take time."
Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw by Premier League newcomers Ipswich Town at Portman Road on Sunday, November 24. Marcus Rashford scored in the opening two minutes of the match. However, a stunner from Omari Hutchinson saw the home side pull back to level before half-time and then keep the score intact until the end.
Rubem Amorim has said that the Manchester United players were not good enough against Ipswich Town. He claimed that they were thinking too much and were losing the ball often, thus unable to make the most of possession.
He was talking to the media after the match when he said via GOAL:
"My players were thinking too much in the game. We had just two days altogether, we need more. They leave us one against one and we have to use those moments. It was a tough match, we lost some balls without pressure. When you start like this, you have to control the ball. We cannot do it at the moment but they really, really tried. They are really trying and they want this. We have to address the new ideas now and try and be better for the next stage."
Manchester United are up against Bodo Glimt in the Europa League this week (November 28) and it will be the manager's first game at Old Trafford. He was appointed as the new manager earlier this month after they sacked Erik ten Hag last month.
