Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher has stated that his former team need to reinforce six positions in their ranks in the upcoming summer transfer window.
During a chat on the Stick to Football podcast, Carragher suggested the Reds should sign an attacking midfielder to replace Dominik Szoboszlai. He said (h/t This Is Anfield):
"I think [with] Szoboszlai, Liverpool can improve that. I know he's a completely different player, he's got great energy, but when you think what Arsenal have got in [Martin] Odegaard, what Manchester City had in [Kevin] De Bruyne in the past, what Chelsea have got in Cole Palmer. Someone who's going to get you close to 15, 20 goals a season from that position."
Naming the positions that Liverpool need to strengthen, he concluded:
"I think [they have to strengthen] three positions in the team – left-back, attacking midfield, centre-forward – and then the other positions – left wing, central midfield and centre-back. They could be players who are really pushing. Not squad players, but three players to come straight into the team and another three players really pushing the other."
Arne Slot's outfit are reportedly likely to inject new blood into their squad in the summer after adding just Federico Chiesa to their ranks past year. They are reportedly aiming to sign a replacement for Andrew Robertson and a centre-back as Virgil van Dijk in well into his thirties. They are also allegedly monitoring a few attackers with Darwin Nunez likely to depart.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Dominik Szoboszlai claimed his attacking output has suffered this campaign due to his defensive responsibilities. He said (h/t This Is Anfield):
"[I play] a free role as an attacking part, but I have to cover a lot for my right side. I'm doing that also for [Mohamed Salah], for the team, for everyone. I'm just happy to help the team and that's my role. Sometimes I feel tired, sometimes I feel like if I wouldn't have done that I would have more energy for attacking, but as long as the team is happy, then I think every individual is happy."
So far this season, Szoboszlai has scored seven goals and registered six assists in 44 games across all competitions for the Merseyside outfit.
Since leaving Bundesliga team RB Leipzig for £60 million in 2023, the 24-year-old has registered 14 goals and 11 assists in 89 total club outings.
