Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher reckons Nottingham Forest will become title contenders if they beat the Reds at home next weekend. Arne Slot's side are atop the pile, leading second-placed Arsenal by six points and have a game in hand.

Meanwhile, Forest picked up their sixth straight league win by beating Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-0 away on Monday (January 6). They are now level on points with the Gunners but behind on goal difference, with the league leaders up next for them on January 14.

Coming to the game at the Molineux, Morgan Gibbs-White put the visitors in front inside seven minutes before Chris Wood doubled their advantage a minute before the break. Taiwo Awoniyi confirmed the three points in the fourth minute of stoppage time for Nuno Espirito Santo's side.

Carragher said on Sky Sports about Forest's title credentials (as per GOAL):

"If they beat Liverpool they are in the title race. What I would say right now is if the Champions League goes to the top five positions they have got one hell of a chance."

Slot's side have had an impressive campaign, with their only defeat coming in the league - a 1-0 home defeat to Forest on matchday four. They are also atop the UEFA Champions League standings after six games.

Before hosting the Reds next week, Forest will be in action at home to Luton Town on Saturday (January 11) in their FA Cup opener. Santo's side's only league title came way back in the 1977-78 season, before the Premier League era.

As mentioned earlier, Liverpool are in the midst of a superb season under new boss Arne Slot, who took over from the legendary Jurgen Klopp at the start of the campaign.

The former Feyenoord tactician has exceeded expectations, as the Reds are the runaway leaders in the Premier League. Despite dropping points in their last game - a stalemate - they have a decent cushion at the top as they seek their first league title in five years.

Following a 2-2 home draw with Manchester United at the weekend, Slot's side will look to return to winning ways when they take on Tottenham Hotspur away in the EFL Cup semi-final first leg on Wednesday (January 8).

Three days later, they host fourth-tier side Accrington Stanley in their FA Cup opener before travelling to Forest in the league, hoping to avoid a double.
