Saudi Pro League chiefs are reportedly ready to offer Liverpool ace Mohamed Salah a higher salary than Cristiano Ronaldo if he joins the league next summer. The Egyptian superstar's contract with the Reds expires in June 2025, and he is yet to sign a new deal with them.
Mohamed Salah has been linked to a move to the Saudi Pro League since last summer. The Saudi side Al-Ittihad had reportedly offered Salah a deal worth €150 million last summer although it did not materialize. In an interview with NBC Sports this week, he claimed he hasn't received any contract renewal offer from Liverpool and he's more out than in at the club.
According to The Daily Mail, Saudi chiefs are ready to cash in the opportunity to sign Mohamed Salah as a free agent if he doesn't renew with Liverpool. The chiefs are reportedly keen on offering the Egyptian a lucrative deal at par with that of Cristiano Ronaldo or even higher.
Ronaldo earns a reported £177 million ($225 million) per year with Al-Nassr with his contract set to expire in June 2025. As per journalist Fabrizio Romano, the Portuguese talisman's contract with the Saudi Pro League giants is valued at a reported €200 million per year, including commercial rights. The deal is reportedly the richest in the history of sports.
Mohamed Salah has built a brand for himself with his exceptional numbers for Liverpool over the years. In 368 appearances for the English club, Salah has contributed 223 goals and 99 assists. The 32-year-old's potential arrival in the Saudi Pro League could further boost the league's meteoric rise in popularity.
Former Manchester United star Lee Sharpe recently claimed that Mohamed Salah is a bigger name than Cristiano Ronaldo in recent times. In an interview with the digital platform Racing Tipster, he said (via Liverpool.com):
"I can only imagine Salah would go to Saudi Arabia, as I don’t think anyone else will be able to afford him. (...) If he did go there, he’d be the biggest player in the Saudi Pro League — he’s still young and fit enough to dominate. We see Cristiano Ronaldo doing well over there, but I think Salah is a better player and a bigger name than him these days."
Cristiano Ronaldo has been in exceptional form for Al-Nassr this season, recording 13 goals and three assists in 17 outings across competitions. He was also the highest goalscorer in the Saudi Pro League last season (2023-24) with 35 goals. However, the Portuguese legend has yet to win a trophy with the Knights of Najd.
