Former Manchester Untied captain Roy Keane has had a go at right-back Trent Alexander-Arnold for his display in the 2-2 Premier League home draw with the Red Devils on Sunday (January 5).
The Englishman put in a forgettable performance amid reports of Liverpool rejecting a bid from Real Madrid for the player. Alexander-Arnold was culpable in the lead-up to United's surprise opener at Anfield, as his misplaced pass eventually led to Lisandro Martinez putting the visitors in front.
Seven minutes later - just before the hour mark - Arne Slot's side restored parity through Cody Gakpo. The in-form Mohamed Salah then put the hosts in front from the spot 20 minutes from time.
However, just when it seemed that United would lose four straight league games for the first time since 1979, Amad Diallo equalised for the visitors from a move that originated down Alexander-Arnold's flank. Three minutes later, the Englishman saw a yellow card before being replaced by Conor Bradley.
Launching a scathing criticism of Alexander-Arnold's performance, Keane said (as per Sky Sports via ESPN):
"There's talk about him going to Real Madrid. To me, he's going to Tranmere Rovers after this."
To add insult to injury, the 20th-placed side in League Two tweeted suggesting that they don't need Alexander-Arnold:
"Trent to Tranmere, Roy? Nah, we're alright, thanks."
The Reds and Tranmere are separated by a whopping 76 places in the English football pyramind. While the stalemate kept Slot's side atop the 20-team Premier League, Tranmere are 20th (among 24 teams) in the fourth division, with the Championship and League One also consisting of 24 teams each.
Liverpool are six points clear of second-placed Arsenal and have a game in hand, having lost just once in 28 games across competitions this season.
Trent Alexander-Arnold has been a key player for Liverpool since his first-team debut in the 2014-15 season. He has bagged 20 goals and 85 assists in 334 appearances across competitions.
That includes a goal and five assists in 24 outings across competitions this season. The lone goal and four of those assists have come in the Premier League, where the Reds are chasing their first title in five years.
Alexander-Arnold's other assist this season has come in five games in the UEFA Champions League, where Arne Slot's side are also atop the standings after six matchdays.
