Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano has expressed his worries about the number of players available to play alongside Lionel Messi for the side against Club America. The Herons will take on the Liga MX outfit in their first pre-season friendly ahead of the 2025 MLS season on January 19.
Mascherano will take charge of his first game with the Supporters' Shield holders when they face the Mexican side. The Argentine tactician will have a very different squad from the one that broke the MLS regular season record following a significant number of outgoings.
Inter Miami have been slow on the transfer front this off-season despite losing several key players, including Diego Gomez, Leonardo Campana, and Matias Rojas. Mascherano spoke at the MLS Media Day, where he revealed his fears with regards to player recruitment and squad size. He said via Inter Miami News:
“I’m worried about getting these transfers in before because we are going to need guys. 11 to start and many to come in as a substitute. We’ve had several losses due to loans that have ended due to some sales, including people that we haven’t been able to renew.
“We’re trying to finish closing some additions. I have faith and I’m almost certain that in these days they’ll be finishing closing some reinforcements that we’ve asked for. And from that, start to give shape to the squad in order to start the preseason.”
Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez have seen three of their most importing supporting pieces in attack leave the club, with only Fafà Picault joining the side. The Herons are said to be interested in a number of players, including Telasco Segovia from Casa Pia and Gonzalo Lujan from San Lorenzo.
Lionel Messi will get a new teammate soon as Inter Miami are reportedly closing in on a deal to sign Venezuelan midfielder Telasco Segovia from Portuguese outfit Casa Pia. The Herons view the 21-year-old as the perfect choice to replace Diego Gomez, who has teamed up with Brighton & Hove Albion.
A report from Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Javier Mascherano's side have reached an agreement with Casa Pia over the transfer of Segovia for $2.5 million. The Portuguese club retain a 50% sell-on clause and will receive some performance-related add-ons as part of the deal.
Attacking midfielder Segovia has scored two goals in 15 league appearances for his Portuguese club this season. The youngster has earned eight senior caps for Venezuela and will be eager to play alongside Lionel Messi at Inter Miami.
