Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has picked three players as untouchables in his current squad, according to journalist Matt Law. The Blues are expected to invest in the squad once again this winter, after falling behind in the title race of late.

A new defender could be on the agenda after Wesley Fofana picked up a hamstring injury in December. Maresca has since stated that the Frenchman could be sidelined for the rest of the campaign.

The situation has prompted talk of a move for Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi, who reportedly has a £60m price tag on his head. However, even if the Englishman arrives at Stamford Bridge this month, Fofana's future appears to be secure.

Speaking on The London is Blue podcast, as cited by The Chelsea Chronicles, Law named Fofana, Levi Cowill and Moises Caicedo as the untouchables in Enzo Maresca's squad.

“Fofana’s [injury is] a huge blow. I know for a fact that Enzo [Maresca] has some untouchables in that team, obviously [Levi] Colwill being the biggest one,” said Law.

He continued:

“[Moises] Caicedo is certainly one of them and Fofana is one of them. He rates Fofana as one of the best defenders, particularly in his system, in the entire country.”

Interestingly, Law doesn't mention Cole Palmer, who has been outstanding for Chelsea since arriving from Manchester City in the summer of 2023. This season, the 22-year-old has registered 13 goals and six assists from 22 games across competitions. The player is under contract until 2033, so the Blues can be relaxed about his future.

Chelsea have hit the ground running under Enzo Maresca this season. The Italian manager took over at Stamford Bridge last summer, fresh from helping Leicester City earn a promotion to the Premier League.

The Blues have since won 18 of their 30 games under Maresca, losing just six. They have scored 73 goals and conceded 33 so far.

The London giants were on a tremendous run in the Premier League before two defeats against Fulham and Ipswich Town brought them to a stuttering stop. Chelsea are winless in the last four games in the league, but remain fourth in the Premier League table.

The Blues have been flawless in the Conference League though, where they are at the top of the table with six wins in six games. The London giants next face Morecambe in the FA Cup third round on Saturday, January 11.
