Major League Soccer (MLS) outfit Inter Miami are reportedly interested in signing Alexis Cuello to help Lionel Messi and Luis Suarez in the upcoming season.

Cuello, 24, relished a decent season on loan at Argentine side San Lorenzo earlier in 2024. The right-footed star started 30 of his 36 appearances in all competitions for San Lorenzo, netting eight goals and contributing one assist as well.

Now, according to reporter Uriel Iugt, new Inter Miami head coach Javier Mascherano is said to be a fan of Cuello and is aiming to add the attacker to his ranks. The Herons have opened formal negotiations to snap up Cuello next year.

Cuello, who rose through the youth ranks of Argentine side Racing Club, will permanently join San Lorenzo for €1 million from Almagro soon. He could be tempted to leave his current team by the prospect of playing alongside Messi in 2025.

Should Cuello secure a permanent switch to Messi's outfit, he could prove to be a fine signing for them. He would act as an ideal replacement for Leonardo Campana, who has joined New England Revolution, and also play on either flank.

Ex-United States international hits out at Lionel Messi's Inter Miami for MLS Cup performance

Earlier this October, Inter Miami won their maiden MLS Supporters' Shield. However, they failed to progress from the first round of the MLS Cup playoffs, crashing to 2-1 and 3-2 losses in the second and third legs against Atlanta United.

Speaking on ESPN's Futbol Americas podcast, ex-United States international Herculez Gomez slammed Lionel Messi's side for failing to win the domestic double. He remarked (h/t GOAL):

"Inter Miami has the best player of all time on their roster, who by the way is league's [Most Valuable Player] MVP. They gave you the keys of the kingdom, not to bow out in three games to Atlanta United, to a ninth place team [in the Eastern Conference table], to Rob Valentino who no longer is the team interim coach at Atlanta. In three games, they couldn't beat [goalkeeper] Brad Guzan."

Sharing more thoughts on Inter Miami's MLS Cup failure, Gomez added:

"It's one of the biggest failures in MLS' history and you damn well know. Every executive, [MLS commissioner] Don Garber, whatever hair he had on top of his head was pulling it out, you had one job. It's one of the biggest failures I've seen in North American sports in quite some time."

Javier Mascherano's team will start their next season in February 2025.
