Flow, directed by Gints Zilbalodis, won Best Motion Picture – Animated at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards on January 5, 2025, beating major titles like Moana 2, The Wild Robot, Inside Out 2, Wallace & Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl, and Memoir of a Snail.

The Latvian film has been widely celebrated for its animation style and emotional depth, earning top honors at the Cannes Film Festival, the Annecy International Animation Film Festival, the European Film Awards, and recognition from the New York and Los Angeles Film Critics Circles.

It also boasts a 97% rating on Rotten Tomatoes and grossed $6.8 million worldwide, making it one of Latvia’s most successful films.

Flow was created using free and open-source software, primarily Blender, making it a rare example of a high-quality animated feature produced on a limited budget. Directed by Gints Zilbalodis, the film was developed with support from the National Film Centre of Latvia, ARTE France, Eurimages, and the Belgian Tax Shelter.

Animation work was completed in France and Belgium, while sound design used real animal recordings to add authenticity, except for the capybara, which featured baby camel sounds due to better tonal quality.

The Flow soundtrack was composed by Gints Zilbalodis and Rihards Zaļupe. Zilbalodis began developing the score during scriptwriting, focusing on rhythm and tone. Zaļupe later expanded the music and added orchestration and melodic themes.

Flow follows a black cat whose peaceful life is turned upside down after a massive flood wipes out its home. The story opens in a dense forest where the cat watches a pack of dogs fight over fish near a river. Seizing an opportunity, the cat snatches a fish and is chased by the dogs before a sudden tsunami forces it to higher ground.

The cat manages to survive by climbing a massive cat statue, but rising water levels soon submerge it completely. Just as the cat is about to drown, a sailboat carrying a capybara arrives, giving it a chance to escape.

The boat becomes a refuge, but survival is far from easy. The cat falls overboard and nearly drowns, only to be rescued by a whale. Along the way, the crew grows, adding a lemur with supplies and a secretarybird that initially attacks the cat but later joins them after losing its ability to fly.

The group faces constant threats, including storms, predators, and dwindling resources, forcing them to work together despite their differences.

Their journey takes them through submerged forests and flooded cities, where they rescue stranded dogs and navigate rising tensions. After the secretarybird regains its ability to fly, it leaves the group, marking a bittersweet moment of growth and separation. In the final stretch, the water suddenly recedes, leaving the animals stranded.

They reunite at the remains of their boat, only to discover a dying whale beached in the forest, reminding them of the disaster’s lasting impact. The film ends with the cat and its companions gazing at their reflections in a puddle, symbolizing survival, change, and the bonds they formed along the way.

Flow will be streaming on Prime Video from January 7, 2025.
