Mufasa: The Lion King is a musical drama film written by Jeff Nathanson and directed by Barry Jenkins. The photorealistically animated movie serves as both a prequel and sequel to 2019's The Lion King, which is a remake of the successful 1994 animated film of the same name. The film is produced by Adele Romanski and Mark Ceryak.
It tells the story of how the orphaned lion cub Mufasa becomes the king and leader of the Pride Lands. Released in theaters on December 20, 2024, Mufasa: The Lion King will be available to stream on Disney+ in the coming weeks.
The film's official synopsis, as per Rotten Tomatoes, reads:
"Told in flashbacks, the story introduces Mufasa as an orphaned cub, lost and alone until he meets a sympathetic lion named Taka--the heir to a royal bloodline. The chance meeting sets in motion an expansive journey of an extraordinary group of misfits searching for their destiny--their bonds will be tested as they work together to evade a threatening and deadly foe."
Since Mufasa: The Lion King is produced by Walt Disney Pictures, it will most likely arrive on the Disney+ streaming platform around 2 to 4 months after the film's release in theaters. Therefore, the adventure film should drop on the streaming platform by February or March 2025. However, no official announcement has been made as of this writing.

Mufasa: The Lion King focuses on the origin story of the titular character and delves into his past through flashbacks. Through Rafiki, his granddaughter Kiara learns about Mufasa as her parents, Simba and Nala, prepare to add a new member to their family.
As a young lion cub, Mufasa gets separated from his parents, Masego and Afia, during a flood. He is rescued by Taka and befriends the royal cub, whose parents, King Obasi and Queen Eshe, welcome him into their pride after much hesitation. Mufasa and Taka grow up together as brothers in the land of Milele.
But, their happy existence is destroyed by King Kiros, the leader of a white lion pride, who kills Taka's parents and drives the brothers away from their land. Away from their home, the two encounter Rafiki, Zazu, and Sarabi.
As Mufasa and Sarabi fall in love, it drives a wedge between the brothers. Taka, who also fancies Sarabi, schemes with Kiros to get Mufasa out of his way. Mufasa brings together all the animals of Milele to defend their land from Kiros and his pride, the Outsiders.
As Kiros attacks Mufasa during the final showdown, Taka intervenes and gets swiped in the face by Kiros, leaving a scar across his eye. Taka becomes known as Scar from then onwards. In the end, Kiros and his pride are defeated, leaving Mufasa as the leader and protector of the Pride Lands.
His son, Simba carries on his legacy as the next king and leader. He continues the circle of life with Nala and their offsprings, the cub princess Kiara and the newborn cub prince, Kion.
