Keanu Reeves made a rare comment about whether or not the fifth installment of John Wick would be happening anytime soon. The Hollywood actor is doing a press run to promote his latest film, Sonic The Hedgehog 3, in which he voices Sonic's powerful rival, Shadow. His talk with CBS News ventured into the John Wick franchise.
As reported by NME on Thursday, December 26, when he was asked about the potential for a John Wick 5 movie, Keanu Reeves isn't closing any doors. However, he said it might be a challenge for his "knees," saying:
"You can never say never. My knees right now are saying 'I can't do another John Wick.' So my heart does but I don't know if my knees can do it."
A John Wick-led film is still up in the air. However, fans will see Keanu Reeves reprise his iconic role in the upcoming spin-off movie, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas.
The Ana de Armas-led Ballerina marks the first feature-length spin-off movie set in the John Wick universe. There was previously a spin-off series called The Continental released in 2023. In Ballerina, de Armas stars as the ballerina-turned-assassin Eve Macarro, who plans to avenge her family's death.
The upcoming movie is set after John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum timeline, where Macarro has started to come at her family's murderers. Lionsgate Movies already published the Ballerina official trailer on September 27 and confirmed Keanu Reeves will reprise his role as John Wick.
In the Ballerina teaser, the opening scene featured the young version of de Armas' character being recruited by Winston before it kicked off into several explosive action scenes. The trailer also showed off returning characters like The Director, Charon, and John Wick himself. That said, the extent of Reeves' role in the upcoming film remains unknown.
Ballerina will be the fifth film coming out of the John Wick franchise universe, and the first one since John Wick: Chapter 4 came out in 2023. The film was initially planned to have a June 7, 2024, release date, but that has come and gone, and it is now slated for a June 6, 2025 premiere.
Besides de Armas and Reeve's appearance, other confirmed cast in the upcoming spin-off are Ian McShane and Winston Scott, both in the original John Wick movies. Lance Reddick, who played his long-running character Charon in the franchise, will also be in Ballerina. Reddick passed away in March 2023, and the upcoming film is one of the last projects he worked on.
Anjelica Huston, who joined the cast of John Wick: Chapter 3 will also reprise her role as "The Director," the head of the Ruska Roma crime syndicate. Other confirmed cast include Norman Reedus as Pine, Gabriel Byrne as The Chancellor, Sharon Duncan-Brewster as Nogi, and more.
While waiting for Keanu Reeves' in Ballerina, fans can watch his latest Sonic The Hedgehog 3 movie, which came out in movie theaters in the US on December 20, 2024.
