A24's erotic thriller film, Babygirl, starring Nicole Kidman was one of the most anticipated movies of 2024. The film's release introduced audiences to several new ways of thinking especially in terms of relationships (romantic and otherwise). It also magnified other relevant aspects of human interaction including power dynamics and se*ual liberty.
As of January 9, Babygirl has approximately 18 award show nominations under its wing, some of which they have already won.
Nicole Kidman has been making appearances in almost all award ceremonies but the one that garnered the most attention is her presence at the National Board of Review Awards on January 8, 2025. While accepting her Best Actress Award at the ceremony, Kidman did something unforgettable.
In a homage to her famous milk scene from Babygirl, Nicole Kidman raised a glass of milk to "all of the baby girls" and chugged it down. She even said "good girl" at the end of the act, another reference from the film.
The milk-chugging scene from the film has attracted considerable attention. As previously stated, Nicole Kidman decided to recreate the same iconic milk scene while accepting her award at the National Board of Review gala.
Standing at the podium, Kidman enthusiastically declared:
"And now, I just want to say anyone who wants to join me, please! I am going to raise a glass of milk to all of the baby girls in the room."
As she spoke, she lifted the glass of milk to her forehead and gave a slight nod before downing the entire glass. She even added a cheerful "good girl" at the end. The audience, which included industry stalwarts like Ariana Grande, Cynthia Erivo, and Elle Fanning, erupted in loud cheers.
In Babygirl the milk scene is presented quite differently than Nicole Kidman's recent recreation at the award show. In the film, Kidman's character Romy Mathis, is encouraged by her intern Samuel, portrayed by Harris Dickinson, with who she is having an affair, to drink a glass of milk. The scene concludes with Samuel whispering "good girl".
This scene serves as a compelling illustration of the complex power dynamics between the two characters, highlighting their intimate relationship.
Babygirl is written and directed by Halina Reijn who is known for being part of projects such as Nadine (2007), Goltzius and the Pelican Company (2012), and Bodies Bodies Bodies (2022). The official synopsis for the film reads:
"A high-powered CEO puts her career and family on the line when she begins a torrid affair with her much younger intern."
Babygirl is available for pre-ordering on Apple TV Plus and Amazon Prime Video in selective regions.
