Peacock has brought to us Lockerbie: A Search for Truth, which tells the shocking story of the Pan Am Flight 103 plane crash and a couple’s quest for justice for their daughter who was killed in it. Divided into five parts, the Peacock miniseries which was released on January 2, 2025, is adapted from the 2021 book The Lockerbie Bombing: A Father’s Search for Justice written by Jim Swire and Peter Biddulph.
The series mainly follows Jim Swire’s activism, seeking justice for his daughter, and demanding that the perpetrators of the heinous crime be brought to justice. The Pan Am Flight 103 plane crash was the deadliest terrorist attack in British history with a total of 270 fatalities. One among those who passed away was Flora Swire, the eldest daughter of Jim and Jane Swire.
British actor Colin Firth, who was born in Grayshott, Hampshire, first rose to fame with his role as Mr. Darcy in BBC’s adaptation of Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice. Following his success, Firth landed the roles of Geoffrey Clifton in The English Patient, Lord Wessex in Shakespeare in Love, Jack Worthing in The Importance of Being Earnest, and Jamie Bennett in Love Actually.
Firth won an Academy Award for Best Actor for playing King George VI in The King’s Speech. His other acclaimed roles are that of Mark Darcy in the Bridget Jones franchise and Harry Hart in the Kingsman franchise.
Colin Firth leads the cast of Lockerbie: A Search for Truth as Jim Swire, an English doctor who turned to activism when his eldest daughter Flora became a victim of the 1988 terrorist attack on Pan Am Flight 103. Frustrated with the lack of official investigation, Swire lobbied for solutions.
He also vehemently advocated for the retrial of the original convicted suspect, Abdelbaset al-Megrahi. Jim Swire co-wrote the book the series has been adapted from, so it is directly based on his first-hand experiences.
Jane Swire is the wife of Jim Swire and mother of victim Flora who supported her husband thoroughly on his quest for justice for their daughter. This role is being essayed by Catherine McCormack in Lockerbie: A Search for Truth
McCormack is best known for playing Murron MacClannough in the Oscar-winning movie Braveheart and has also appeared in numerous British period dramas like The Land Girls and Dancing at Lughnasa. Her works in Hollywood include The Tailor of Panama, Spy Game, 28 Weeks Later, and Woody Allen’s Magic in the Moonlight. Catherine McCormack is best known for her small-screen roles in Sherlock, The Witcher, and Slow Horses.
Ardalan Esmaili is an Iranian actor who rose to fame with his lead role of Esmail in the 2017 Danish drama film The Charmer. He has also played the role of Omar alongside Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, Carice van Houten, and Guy Pearce in Brian De Palma's crime thriller Domino and Karimi in Netflix's 2022 action movie Black Crab. Esmaili has also played Tommy Rantakyrö in Rebecka Martinsson, Michel Maloof in The Helicopter Heist, and Farid in Deliver Me.
Ardalan Esmaili plays the role of Abdelbaset al-Megrahi in Lockerbie: A Search for Truth. Megrahi was the head of security for Libyan Arab Airlines and also the director of the Centre for Strategic Studies in Tripoli, Libya. In 2001, he was convicted on 270 counts of murder in relation to his role in the 1988 Lockerbie bombing and he was given a life sentence. His co-accused, Al Amin Khalifa Fhimah, was found innocent and was acquitted.
