Claire's third wedding was a significant aspect of the narrative in Outlander season 7 part 2, which happened after she learned the news that Jamie supposedly perished at sea. Though the circumstances of the wedding were similar to her marriage to Jamie in the first season of Outlander, her motivations were entirely different this time.

Shortly after the news of Jamie's death, Lord John Grey learned that Claire was about to be arrested as a spy. As a high-ranking officer in the British army, although he was out of active duty at the time, he thought that if Claire married him, it would spare her from being arrested.

In the end, Claire married Lord John Grey not long after Jamie's supposed death for her safety and freedom. What happened between them after the wedding was a manifestation of their broken hearts over Jamie being gone from their lives.

After receiving a letter from Jamie that he would be arriving in Philadelphia soon, a man named Amias Ratcliff, the captain of the HMS Roberts, told Lord John and Claire that Jamie perished at sea while aboard the Euterpe. While Claire was hesitant to believe it, Ratcliffe confirmed Jamie's supposed demise because he saw the ship get lost at sea during a storm, and Jamie's name was among the passengers listed on the manifest.

Days passed, and Claire did nothing but grieve her husband, but Lord John received news from Captain Richardson that Claire would be arrested and hanged as a spy. Days before, Claire helped Mercy deliver letters to the rebels when Mercy found herself in a bind, and it appeared that one of the soldiers found out what Claire was doing.

Lord John, who was in love with Jamie, said that he would honor his friend by marrying Claire to protect her. He knew that if Claire married him, the British soldiers wouldn't arrest her, and Claire would understand why the wedding had to be done.

Claire was opposed to marrying Lord John in the beginning and didn't much care what happened to her after believing that Jamie died. However, she finally relented, thinking that the British soldiers would also hunt her family if she was arrested as a spy. As seen in Outlander season 7 episode 11, Claire wed Lord John Grey at his house without any fanfare.
