Cody Rhodes will do the right thing in a potential match with John Cena, says 50-year-old athlete

As the talk in the wrestling town is that Dwayne Johnson is not interested in facing Cody Rhodes, the rumored match against John Cena is gaining more traction. The American Nightmare is the Undisputed WWE Champion heading into this WrestleMania season, which means the company most definitely has a massive bout planned for him on The Grandest Stage of Them All in April 2025.

Touching upon a potential WrestleMania 41 headliner between Cody Rhodes and John Cena, their former colleague Matt Hardy agreed that The American Nightmare was a smart guy who would understand if he needed to shift gears. This means that a heel turn, or at least being a tweener, was possible.

The dynamic for this potential contest was compared to The Rock vs. Hulk Hogan at WrestleMania 18, where a babyface People's Champion decided to play along as the heel when Hogan received the overwhelming support of the Canadians in attendance. Speaking on The Extreme Life of Matt Hardy, the 50-year-old stated:

"Of course, yeah. [Cody Rhodes is] very much a smart guy. He listens to the crowd. There will be that point — it's the nature of the beast when it comes to pro wrestling. When you're successful for so long, win for so long, and hold a title so long, [the fans are] like, 'Oh my God. Can somebody else win it now?' And then it eventually happens when that polarizing effect sets in and you start making this guy a tweener." [From 31:40 to 32:08]

Matt Hardy pointed to John Cena's career itself, how fans threw shade at the latter many times for his 'Super Cena' persona. Nevertheless, Hardy was positive that this potential marquee match could work well at The Show of Shows later this year.

John Cena's father would rather him face World Heavyweight Champion Gunther

John Cena Sr. spoke to Sportskeeda Wrestling's Senior Editor Bill Apter recently. He admitted that he would love to see a match between his son and Gunther.

He clarified that he has nothing against Cody Rhodes, it is simply because The Ring General is a better opponent for Cena at this stage. Cena Sr. felt that they would complement each other from an in-ring perspective and their approach towards working the match. He believes John should defeat Gunther, but even if he lost, his father noted that there would be nothing to be ashamed of.

As for the potential Rhodes-Cena match, John Cena Sr. does not believe that match will happen, despite the rumors. He is certain Dwayne Johnson is the one who will go after The American Nightmare this WrestleMania season.
