One of the biggest surprises at New Year's Evil was The Rock's backstage segment with Ethan Page and NXT general manager Ava Raine. It was also a little bit awkward toward the end, which garnered an honest response from All Ego.
Page, the former NXT Champion, was airing his grievances to the NXT GM for not being part of New Year's Evil. Things were heating up when The Final Boss showed up to calm it down. He gave All Ego a massive rub by telling him that he's looking forward to seeing him on the main roster.
At the end of their exchange, The Rock inexplicably tapped Page's backside. WWE cameras caught up with the 35-year-old star after the segment and asked him to talk about what happened with The Final Boss:
"You know, Shawn Michaels? Not a fan. Triple H, not a fan. Nick Khan, I’m assuming not a fan. The Final Boss seems to get what I got going on. Hell, he even said I had a sweet a**. I guess we could say that The Final Boss smells what Ethan Page is cooking," Page said.
While Ethan Page gets a boost of confidence from The Rock, he needs to watch his back for Je'Von Evans and Cedric Alexander. Evans is currently out with a horrific injury, while Alexander has injured fingers following an attack by the former NXT Champion. Both men are likely going for revenge once they are ready and healed up.
After a surprise appearance on WWE RAW, The Rock announced that he'll be at NXT New Year's Evil. He arrived and greeted his daughter Ava Raine after a short segment with Ethan Page. He then went to the ring and addressed the fans.
Nevertheless, it was a record-breaking appearance by The Final Boss because NXT had its best ratings since September 25, 2019, as reported by Inside the Ropes. Tuesday's special episode garnered 957,000 viewers, compared to 626,000 from last week's show.
Two new champions were also crowned during the show. Giulia defeated Roxanne Perez to become the NXT Women's Championship, while Oba Femi beat Trick Williams and Eddy Thorpe to win the NXT Championship.
