Former WCW President Eric Bischoff recently discussed the rivalry between Vince McMahon and Ted Turner. The two billionaires owned WWE and WCW during the 1990s.
The wrestling business witnessed the Monday Night Wars from the mid-to-late 90s with WWE and WCW battling for supremacy. The two companies went head to head for years, with the Vince McMahon-led promotion finally emerging on top.
This week on Wrestling Shoot Interviews, Eric Bischoff detailed that Ted loved the product and always had a vision for professional wrestling on the network. But Bischoff mentioned that Turner barely had anything to do with the actual creative direction of WCW. He explained that Vince McMahon had always portrayed Turner as a billionaire trying to drive him out of business.
"Ted really believed that professional wrestling is a great property. It's an important thing for a network to have because it draws so many people that are middle class. This is not high-brow entertainment, this is just your average working person whether its in UK or the States. Now you do get some other demos in wrestling but Ted really believed in the product. So once WCW started being and outperforming WWE, Ted was really excited about that. But other than those phone calls, Ted never had anything to do with the business. Vince wanted to make it look like Ted Turner was just trying to grind him into oblivion. Nothing is further from the truth." [From 2:56 - 3:42]
Back in September, Netflix released a six-part docuseries on Vince McMahon. The show delved into the rise and fall of wrestling's greatest promoter.
On the show, McMahon also spoke about every aspect of his life including his traumatic childhood. Other members of his family and his employees also shared their experiences with the 79-year-old former WWE boss.
McMahon was recently in the news with rumors circulating that he was planning to start an entertainment hub company. The reports claimed that a few WWE alumni had also joined him in the endeavor.
