A former WWE star has commented on her failed heel turn in 2018. Becky Lynch provided a reason why it did not work out.
The Man had an underwhelming run during her first few years on the main roster. However, it all changed when she attacked Charlotte Flair after their Triple Threat match at WWE SummerSlam in 2018. Even though she turned heel, the fans refused to boo her, and she went on to become one of the biggest babyfaces in the company.
During a recent appearance at the Vulture Festival, Becky Lynch was asked why her heel turn failed. The 37-year-old explained that she was supposed to be a babyface and not a bad buy, but was miscast.
"'Cause I was a babyface. I don't know who watched that story and was like, 'Oh yeah, that's the a**h**e.' I had been the one who was always overlooked, the one that was always scratching and clawing, and, you know, real happy and full of nervous energy. This lovable idiot that came out—or maybe just an idiot, I don't know—but yeah, something lovable about that. And, you know, I’d find the audience were getting behind me, and they really wanted to see me have my moment," she said. [34:56-35:40]
During SummerSlam 2018, it was Big Time Becks vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Carmella for the SmackDown Women's Title. The Queen won the title by pinning Becky. After the bout, Lynch attacked Flair.
Becky Lynch looked back on that match and stated that the storytelling was wrong.
"So, she [Charlotte] ended up winning by pinning me, who had already got Carmella in an armbar, and—by the way—by hitting me from behind. So the whole storytelling was so off, and it was so wrong, and it was so great because it really worked in my favor. But, like, anyway, that's why—because it was told wrong. It was just the story was told with the wrong person being the bad guy." [36:15-36:56]
Becky Lynch has been gone from WWE for several months now after her contract reportedly expired. She'll undoubtedly get a big reaction if and when she returns.
