Major championship rematch announced for WWE SmackDown

WWE is less than one hour from its first SmackDown of 2025, and things are seemingly hectic backstage at the Footprint Center in Phoenix. As plans were being finalized for tonight's show, an unfortunate situation began to unfold behind the scenes, and now Nick Aldis has booked another major match.

DIY were set to defend the WWE Tag Team Championship against The Street Profits after Montez Ford and Angelo Dawkins were recently placed in line for another title shot. However, the SmackDown General Manager took to Instagram tonight with less than one hour before showtime to announce that Ford and Dawkins suffered undisclosed injuries this past week on the annual post-Christmas live event tour. Aldis did not elaborate on the injuries but noted that the medical staff had not cleared The Profits for competition despite their requests.

Aldis has now announced DIY vs. The Motor City Machine Guns for tonight's SmackDown, with the titles on the line. Tommaso Ciampa and Johnny Gargano dethroned Alex Shelley and Chris Sabin of the titles, thanks to a heel turn ruse, on the December 6 SmackDown episode, and the teams have feuded ever since.
