A top WWE champion defended his title tonight despite a serious injury mid-match. He managed to successfully retain his North American Championship.

Tony D'Angelo has grown to become one of the top stars in WWE NXT. For the past few years, his performances in backstage segments and matches have been rated quite highly. He has also been involved in many major storylines on the developmental brand.

After tasting success as a tag team champion, The Don of NXT pursued the North American Title and finally won it at Halloween Havoc by defeating Oba Femi. Since then, Shawn Spears has been trying to get a match for the title. However, he got interrupted at every opportunity.

Two weeks ago, Shawn Spears finally confronted Tony D'Angelo and asked him for a match against Brooks Jensen. The North American Champion faced Jensen last week and won. However, following the match, Jensen blindsided Tony and then seemingly hurt his leg.

Tonight on WWE NXT, Tony defended his title against Spears but it was clear the former was not fully healed yet after last week's assault. During the match, Tony's leg buckled which allowed the former AEW star to lock in the figure four leg lock. However, The Don was able to recover and picked up the win.

Following the match, Brooks Jensen and Spears tried to attack Tony but he fought them off. While the champion was busy fighting them off, Niko attacked him from behind.

It will be interesting to see what Niko's arrival means for Tony D'Angelo and his North American Championship reign on NXT.
