Vince McMahon had CM Punk removed from WWE backstage, veteran explains why (Exclusive)
CM Punk had a rather tumultuous run in AEW before he returned to WWE. At one point, he was seen backstage in the Stamford-based promotion while still being contracted to the Tony Khan-led company. Vince McMahon seemingly asked Punk to leave the building. Vince Russo recently discussed the incident on a podcast.
It should be noted that at that point Vince McMahon was still the main authority figure in WWE. According to reports, Punk talked to Triple H and some other stars before he was asked by security to leave the premises. This, as expected, caused much buzz since The Second City Saint was signed to AEW.
On Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Outlaws, Vince Russo said Punk probably had heat with some other top stars, which would have led to McMahon having him removed from the venue.
"I would say if some of the, not even some of the, one or two, if some key top guys had heat with Punk, and they said something to Vince, Vince would have gotten them out of there before there was gonna be an issue." [8:00 onwards]
The WWE veteran recently commented on AEW's programming structure
Vince Russo recently talked about what AEW stars had apparently told him regarding the process of planning shows in the Jacksonville-based promotion.
On an episode of Sportskeeda's The Wrestling Outlaws, Russo said Tony Khan did not really plan much of the show. The WWE veteran said:
"I've heard from guys on top of AEW where, you know, with Tony [Khan], it's basically just go out there and do whatever you want. You gotta have some kind of control and, you know, in order to put out the type of product that you want. So you really got to find that happy medium." [From 8:00 to 8:18]
It remains to be seen what AEW plans to do to improve its brand. The company will present its next pay-per-view, Worlds End 2024, on December 28.
