WCW's invasion of WWE kicked off when Lance Storm superkicked his way in and out of the ring. However, fan interest faded when Vince McMahon failed to get big names such as Hulk Hogan and Sting to join the angle.
Speaking on a recent edition of What Were They Thinking? on Backstage Pass, JBL explained why the Invasion angle suffered even though it started strong in the WWE ring.
"The problem with WCW coming back was we didn't get Scott (Hall) and Kevin (Nash). We didn't get gold Goldberg, we didn't get Bischoff, we didn't get Hogan. You know, these guys were under contract. So we got some wonderful stars. We got a two time Hall of Famer who's one of my dear friends, Booker T. We got DDP and we got a whole host of other great talent. But we didn't get those guys that were part of the nWO that were the formation of the nWO. And because of that, I thought the whole invasion angle really hurt."
He continued:
"It's kind of a watered down version of what people were expecting because when they were expecting the WCW, they wanted one of those guys who'd been on the front of open up every show during the Attitude Era, you know, of the nWO... and Bischoff and all those guys that made-up that great faction." [From 02:36 onwards]
Speaking of Eric Bischoff, the former RAW General Manager appeared on an episode of WWE NXT back in December. It remains to be seen if Bischoff appears on RAW's Netflix debut.
