Lionel Messi's inclusion in this year's MLS Best XI has generated a strong reaction from fans. The Argentinean enjoyed an impressive campaign with Inter Miami, registering 23 goals and 13 assists from 25 games across competitions.
Messi's efforts helped the Herons reach the top of the MLS Eastern Conference table and win the Supporters' Shield. Unfortunately, La Pulga couldn't guide the Florida-based club to the MLS Cup, crashing out in the first round at the hands of Atlanta United.
However, that didn't stop him from making it to the team of the season.
Once the news was out, fans took to social media to express their opinion. One fan insisted that the place wasn't deserved, commenting:
"Messi has robbed in every continent… He should be the most Wanted on Interpol in a sane world."
Another added:
"Playing up top with Benteke was his dream"
Another hinted that Lionel Messi is better than the current crop of Real Madrid players, posting:
"Without playing, blud be bagging recognition here and there, something Madrid players will need ref for."
One fan insisted that Luis Suarez should have made the cut too, posting:
"Obviously he was the best MLS player, But suarez not being there is kinda…….."
Another pointed out that the formation wouldn't work, commenting:
"Don't think that 3-3-4 formation is going work chief"
Another quipped:
"3-3-4 just to fit in the worst player oat"
Lionel Messi's contract with Inter Miami expires at the end of next season.
Lionel Messi arrived at Inter Miami in the summer of 2023 following the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). There was tremendous interest in his services from the Middle East, but the Argentinean legend opted to move to the MLS instead.
La Pulga took no time to get settled at the Chase Stadium and powered the Herons to the Leagues Cup last season. It was the club's first piece of silverware in their history and the 37-year-old's 44th trophy of his career.
In doing so, Messi equaled Dani Alves to become the most successful player in the history of the game. However, the Argentinean surpassed his former teammate by winning his second Copa America this summer.
The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner lifted his 46th trophy with Inter Miami this season. La Pulga has now registered 34 goals and 18 assists from 39 games for the Herons and is their record goalscorer.
