Pundit Frank Leboeuf has spoken about Kylian Mbappe's form and poor performance in Real Madrid's loss to Liverpool. The Spanish giants visited Anfield on November 27 for their Champions League clash but were left disappointed with a 2-0 loss.
Mbappe did very little to turn things around for his club, and there was little he could do, as the 25-year-old was held down well by the Reds' defenders. He had just two shots on target, with one coming from the penalty spot. However, he missed the penalty, which could have equalized the game as the score was 1-0 at the time (61').
This shoddy performance led to a reaction from Frank Leboeuf, who slammed Kylian Mbappe. He said on ESPN:
"The focus on Mbappe and the fact he's been criticised because, yeah, he's not giving enough of what we expect from him, and that's what it is. And last season, the end of the season, was as boring as it is right now, we have to be fair, and it was playing for Paris Saint-Germain. We had some question marks as well."
"Well, he had a bad European Championship because of a nose broken, but, yeah, for like, I would say six, seven months, we don't recognise Mbappé. When he was playing before, he was capable of creating the difference on his own."
Leboeuf added:
"He's not able to do that right now, and that's really worrying me in a way that I don't see if he's going to be capable of getting it back, because the pressure is going to be very intense right now."
Kylian Mbappe has now scored a mere three goals in his last 10 appearances for Real Madrid, and he will hope to return to an improved goalscoring form.
Former Real Madrid midfielder Steve McManaman has shared his thoughts about Kylian Mbappe's performance against Liverpool. He said on TNT Sports (via BBC):
"We haven't seen the best of Mbappe tonight. They needed Mbappe tonight and he flattered to deceive. The Madrid press will be ruthless because he didn’t deliver again when he needed to."
"Madrid are going through a rough patch and the big players are not performing. All the baggage around Mbappe magnifies it. This year they are really, really struggling."
Real Madrid have endured a poor run of form, especially in the UEFA Champions League. Los Blancos have lost three games out of five in the competition, and they are currently threatened with being kicked out in the group phase.
They currently sit in 24th, just outside the knockout zone. If they cannot make the top eight, they will need to play in the playoffs to advance to the next phase.
