Former player Tim Sherwood has made a fresh prediction on who among Arsenal, Liverpool, and Chelsea will win the English Premier League. Previously, he had tipped the Gunners to go all the way and clinch the title, but a turn of events in the past week has changed his mind.
After Arsenal beat Crystal Palace 5-1 at Selhurst Park on December 21, the pundit opined that they were set to win the title. He explained at the time (via TBR Football):
“Pep Guardiola and Man City have been his only problem, and they’re not there any more, so, for me, I know I’ve said it before, they’re my favourites to win the Premier League."
"I think Arsenal win 10 or 15 games on the spin when they get back to fitness, but they need to improve, Martinelli needs to improve or they need to go to Trossard and find a different solution."
Manchester City's difficulties on the pitch have placed them out of the title race entirely. While this might have opened up the path for the Gunners, who have ended runners-up twice in a row, they are currently third on the league table, behind Liverpool and Chelsea.
Tim Sherwood watched Liverpool beat Tottenham Hotspur 6-3 at New White Hart Lane on December 22, leading him to change his prediction. The pundit said (via TBR Football):
“Everything is looking perfect for Liverpool at the moment. I tipped Arsenal to win the Premier League, but I watched them and I have to change my mind. I’m allowed to change my mind aren’t I? Watching them dismantle Tottenham, they look sensational, the width of [Cody] Gakpo and [Mohamed] Salah."
The Reds are in first place with a game in hand. They are four points ahead of second-placed Chelsea.
Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca has said the Blues could be in the title race alongside bigwigs Liverpool and Arsenal. He had previously insisted that the Stamford Bridge outfit were not in the title race.
However, with the domestic campaign nearing its halfway mark, his side are indeed near the top of the table. Speaking to the press ahead of their home game against Fulham on Boxing Day, he said (via Daily Mail):
"I think, for sure, the reality is that we are second and we are not just second after four or five games, when probably the table is still not the real one. It's almost halfway, at 17 games, so probably the table reflects, a little bit, the teams and where they are."
Chelsea will need to keep up their impressive run of form, which has seen them win 10 league games so far. In all competitions, the Blues have won eight games in a row.
