Sons of Ecstasy is one of the latest documentaries released on HBO's OTT platform, Max. It premiered in the US on Thursday, January 9, 2025, at 3 am ET.
Sons of Ecstasy is a Max original documentary set in the backdrop of Arizona, US, in the 1990s amidst a flourishing drug trade. It follows the story of ecstasy trafficking through the lens of one of the key players in the business, Gerard Gravano, son of the mafia underboss Sammy Gravano.
This documentary provides an exclusive look into Sammy Gravano's life. He was incarcerated for his involvement with the mafia in New York, for which he served a five-year sentence. After release, he relocated to Arizona with his wife and children under the Witness Protection Program.
The documentary takes a deep dive into his involvement in the world of drug trade and also showcases their rival, Shaun Attwood, a stockbroker-turned-drug dealer who started undercutting the Gravano business.
Sons of Ecstasy is directed by Elli Hakami and Julius P. Hobbs of Talos Films. It is produced in association with Investigation Discovery for HBO Max and Warner Bros. Discovery. The official logline of the documentary reads:

The documentary explores the story of Salvatore "Sammy the Bull" Gravano, a notorious mobster belonging to the Gambino crime family. When he was captured, he confessed to 19 deaths and testified against the mafia boss John Gotti to enter a plea deal and reduce his sentence to 5 years.
Upon release, he and his family, including his son Gerard and daughter Karen, were placed under the Witness Protection Program in Arizona. However, Arizona in the 1990s was a hotspot for drug trafficking, and Gerard got involved in the business.
When an English stockbroker, Shaun Attwood, started undercutting Gerard's business, a bitter rivalry ensued to determine who would control the Ecstasy Empire of Arizona. The documentary contains first-hand accounts from Karen, Gerard, and Attwood as they recount the true story of their lives and the fight for control of Arizona's drug trade.
