The Batman: Part II movie has been officially delayed to October 1, 2027. Variety reports that Warner Bros. announced this news on Friday. This marks the second major delay for the sequel, which was originally planned for late 2025 and then pushed to October 2026.

A major reason for the pushback of The Batman: Part II is the reshuffling of Warner Bros.'s release schedule. The production for the sequel is yet to start, meaning fans will now have to wait over five years since the release of the first movie in 2022. The delay also affects other projects on the DC calendar.

Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman features a younger, reclusive Bruce Wayne (Robert Pattinson) in his second year as Gotham's vigilante. The film received critical acclaim upon its release, particularly for Robert Pattinson's and Paul Dano's performances. It grossed over $770 million worldwide and inspired the HBO spinoff series The Penguin.

As stated above, The Batman: Part II will be released on October 1, 2027. The sequel was first announced at CinemaCon in April 2022, with Robert Pattinson confirmed to return for the role.

The Batman: Part II was originally slated for October 2025 but was moved to October 2, 2026, due to the Hollywood writers' and actors' strikes. This week, Warner Bros. announced the further delay to 2027. As reported by Deadline on December 27, 2024, the production house attributed the delay to the high production quality parameters for the sequel.

Another reason for the movie's postponement is that the script is still being revised. In a post on the social media platform Threads, James Gunn, the CEO of DC Studios, confirmed the news, stating:

"Yes, it is true. The only reason for the delay is there isn’t a full script (those of you who follow me here probably know that already). Matt is committed to making the best film he possibly can, and no one can accurately guess exactly how long a script will take to write. Once there is a finished script, there is around two years for pre-production, shooting and post-production on big films."

One of the prominent reasons for the change in the release date of The Batman: Part II is the revised DC calendar. The October 2026 release date of The Batman: Part II has now been allotted to a film by Alejandro G. Iñárritu starring Tom Cruise.

Another major shift in the calendar involves Pattinson's upcoming movie Mickey 17, which is switching places with Sinners, starring Michael B. Jordan. Bong Joon-ho's sci-fi film Mickey 17 has been moved from April 2025 to March 2025, and Ryan Coogler’s Sinners takes its place.

While fans may be disappointed, these decisions underscore Warner Bros.'s effort to prioritize quality over speed. Gunn posted a statement on Threads defending the decision, which reads:

"To be fair, a 5 year gap or more is fairly common in sequels. 7 years between Alien and Aliens. 14 years between Incredibles. 7 years between the first two Terminators. 13 years between Avatars. 36 years between Top Guns. And, of course, 6 years between Guardians Vol 2 and Vol 3."

The Batman: Part II will be set in Reeves' Gotham-centric universe, the Batman Epic Crime Saga. This universe, which also includes Colin Farrell's The Penguin, remains separate from James Gunn’s emerging DC Universe. The movie is the second part of an extended Batman trilogy.
