Michael Cera once referred to Aubrey Plaza as “my ex-wife,” alluding to a memorable period in their lives when the duo nearly tied the knot. Cera and Plaza dated for over a year after meeting on the set of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Their connection was reportedly so strong that they considered an impulsive marriage during a road trip through Las Vegas. The anecdote resurfaced recently as both actors are set to reprise their Scott Pilgrim roles in an upcoming Netflix anime adaptation.

In an interview with Rolling Stone in 2023, Cera revealed a lighthearted moment from their relationship. He recalled how they planned to marry and immediately divorce. Cera said:

“I think the idea was to then get a divorce right away, so we could call each other 'my ex-husband'nand 'my ex-wife'tat like … 20."

Aubrey Plaza, known for her versatility as an actress, has made headlines recently for her achievements and personal life. On January 3, 2025, American filmmaker Jeff Baena, Plaza's husband, unexpectedly passed away due to suicide.

Michael Cera shared that they nearly married in Las Vegas during a road trip with Aubrey Plaza. Driving through the city, the young couple entertained the idea of spontaneously exchanging vows.

Cera explained their thought process in his interview with Rolling Stone.

“We were driving through Vegas, and we almost just spontaneously took a detour and got married," Cera said.

Plaza later described in a 2016 episode of RuPaul's podcast about their relationship as one based on mutual respect and understanding, saying,

“We love each other, and we’re still really good friends. He’s just a weird little freak, and we speak the same language.”

After their brief romance, Cera and Plaza have maintained a strong bond. They collaborated on The End of Love in 2012 and reunited for the 10-year anniversary table read of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.

Plaza has openly praised Cera’s talents, and the latter expressed admiration for the former's dedication to her craft. While interviewing with Rolling Stone, Cera said:

"She's always been so committed to everything that she does. It's not surprising to me that she's doing really well. The thing that's surprising to me is how much she's producing and putting together projects. It's amazing."

Reuniting on screen

Their next collaboration came in Netflix’s 2023 anime adaptation of Scott Pilgrim vs. the World. The project, which reunited the original cast, including Mary Elizabeth Winstead and Chris Evans, highlighted the lasting impact of the cult classic.
