Will Krypto the Superdog appear in the New Superman Film? James Gunn confirms the details
James Gunn took to social media to share that Superman won't be the only Kryptonian to appear in the upcoming 2025 DC film. Krypto, the Superdog, will be joining the Man of Steel. In an Instagram post uploaded by Gunn on October 15, he shared the first still of Krypto alongside David Corenswet's DC superhero sitting together and getting a good view of Earth from space.
In the caption, Gunn wrote about how Krypto in the upcoming Superman film was inspired by his dog Ozu. The director spoke about how Ozu was adopted while writing the film, and during his early days, he was quite troublesome. He added that this led him to think about Krypto and thus include him in the script. He wrote:
"Ozu, who came from a hoarding situation in a backyard with 60 other dogs & never knew human beings, was problematic to say the least. He immediately came in & destroyed our home, our shoes, our furniture - he even ate my laptop. It took a long time before he would even let us touch him."
He continued:
"I remember thinking, “Gosh, how difficult would life be if Ozu had superpowers?” - and thus Krypto came into the script & changed the shape of the story as Ozu was changing my life. What better time to debut the not-so-good-good-boy Krypto than #AdoptAShelterDog Month."
Fans will be able to see Krypto the Superdog on the big screens when Superman releases in theatres on July 11, 2025.
Who is Krypto the Superdog?
In the comics, Krypto is Superman's superpowered pet dog. He first appeared in Adventure Comics #210 in March 1955 and was created by Otto Binder and Curt Swan. Back on Krypton, Krypto was the house dog of Jor-El, the Man of Steel's birth father. He was also used as a test subject for the spaceship that would eventually be used to send Kal-El to Earth.
However, Krypto's ship ended up going off course in space, where he was stuck for a long time. Krypto's ship eventually picked up Kal-El's signal on Earth. The ship then crash-landed on the Kent Farm, where he was discovered by Clark Kent. The two bonded, and Krypto eventually became Clark's pet. The two then went on their own adventures.
What is known about the upcoming Superman film?
The upcoming Superman film will be the first major release of James Gunn's new DC film slate. Apart from being the director, Gunn also wrote the script for the film. David Corenswet will be taking over the role of the Man of Steel, becoming the next major actor to play the superhero on the big screen after Henry Cavill.
Corenswet will be joined by Rachel Brosnahan, who will be playing Lois Lane, his love interest. Nicholas Hoult will be starring as his nemesis, Lex Luthor. Alongside them, various other DC superheroes are set to appear in the movie.
Guy Gardner, also known as Green Lantern, will be played by Nathan Fillion. Edi Gathegi was cast as Mr. Terrific. Isabela Merced will also be part of the film as Hawkgirl, and Metamorpho will be played by Anthony Carrigan.
