On November 22, Kendrick Lamar dropped his surprise album, GNX. Two minutes and five seconds into its seventh track, tv off, the Compton rapper mentioned his longtime collaborator, DJ, and music producer Mustard, whose real name is Dijon Isaiah McFarlane.
However, instead of just rapping Mustard’s name into the song, Kendrick screamed the word “MUSTARRRDDD” for nearly five seconds, and later repeated the same towards the end of the track. Ever since, it has triggered a memefest online.
Meanwhile, during December 3’s Twitch stream with streamer Los Pollos, Drake trolled Kendrick Lamar for the latter’s ‘Mustard’ scream.
"CUSTAAAAARRRRD," Drake wrote in the chat box.
He followed it up with another pinned message that read:
“We need a donut emoji in the chat custarrrrddddd.”
In the wake of this, netizens are now having diverse reactions to Drake shading Kendrick Lamar. For instance, X user @spectre0799 commented on NFR Podcast’s post revealing the same by writing:
“Bro got banished to kick stream chats.”
Many people joined the conversation and shared similar reactions on the platform.
“His ways of trolling Kendrick are always so corny lmfao,” a person wrote.
“He’s actually so unfunny,” one person wrote.
“Lil Yatchy: ‘Drake doesn’t care about the beef.’ Also Drake:” wrote another.
Others continued to weigh in.
“Too old to be doing this,” a netizen wrote.
“Nice to know he listened to the album,” another netizen wrote.
“Drake spiraling,” an individual wrote.
“This man’s downfall will be studied,” wrote another.
So far, Kendrick Lamar hasn’t commented on Drake’s shade at him.
On the day Kendrick Lamar dropped GNX, Mustard told Billboard how the album release was premature (he thought it would be released on Thanksgiving), adding he hadn’t even heard the track tv off that mentioned him.
“That sh*t was elite. So fire. Like, is that a new tag?” he shared.
Mustard explained that he was considering adding K-Dot’s scream as his new producer tag, or a short audio clip attached at the beginning of a beat that recognizes the producer who created it.
“[It was] definitely intentional... I can’t wait to perform that song and just hear people just saying that, ‘cause everybody’s going to say that like crazy,” the Kendrick associate noted.
Mustard further mentioned how the track's first part's beat was in the "same realm" as that of Not Like Us (also produced by him), while the second half was a "beat that I was doing for this other theatrical album that I’m trying to make." He explained how he randomly sent it to Kendrick Lamar who thought it was "crazy."
Notably, Mustard may not have known the exact release date of GNX or heard the final version of tv off, but he produced the track with Jack Antonoff, Sean Momberger, Sounwave, and Kamasi Washington.
The Not Like Us producer has ever since shared many Mustard memes that have come out, from reposting McDonald’s “HONEY MUSTAAAARRRRDDDD” meme with his own caption, "Omg lol" to Dorito’s Hot Mustard Flavored Tortilla chips with the same exaggeration.
Some of the other Mustard memes circulating online include ones from Shrek, Minions, NFL, NBA, Playstation, Heinz, film studios like Universal Pictures, and more. Even athletes like LeBron James, influencers like Kai Cenat, and industry insiders such as Lizzo, have taken part in it.
tv off, which features Baldwin Park rapper Lefty Gunplay, is written by Duckworth and is 3 minutes and 40 seconds long. It debuted at number 2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 chart.
