Mattel is being sued by a South Carolina resident after the company accidentally placed the link attached to an adult website on the now-recalled Wicked dolls. The complainant, Holly Ricketson claims that her minor daughter was directed to the adult website due to the misprint, which caused both her and her daughter “emotional distress.”
In her complaint, Holly mentioned that they were directed to a page with “hardcore, full-on nude p*rnographic images depicting actual intercourse.” The suit reads:
“Plaintiff’s minor daughter immediately showed her mother the photographs and both were horrified by what they saw. If Plaintiff had been aware of such an inappropriate defect in the Product, she would not have purchased it.”
As soon as this news made its way on social media, several netizens began pouring in their reactions. An X user, @PopCrave posted about the same, to which another social media user responded by saying:
“She’s just trying to get the bag.”
Others also had similar reactions, as many wrote about how the mother had filed a lawsuit only to “get a bag,” which as per USA Today means “to acquire money.”
“LMAOOO I know they’re lying but they better get their bag!!!” wrote one X user.
“I guessed after they passed the age verification barrier,” exclaimed another.
“Me when I want money,” commented one more netizen.
However, there were others who agreed with Holly and bashed Mattel for the blunder.
“Deserved bc how do u make that mistake,” stated one social media user.
“I knew this was coming lol,” wrote another.
“Oh, I read about this! It's crazy that the designer of the box never checked or re-checked his work,” added one more X user on the post.
After several customers posted about the error made by Mattel, on social media, the company recalled their special edition doll set, which featured the characters from the movie Wicked. The company even spoke to The Associated Press and claimed that they “deeply” regret the same. The statement read:
“Mattel was made aware of a misprint on the packaging of the Mattel Wicked collection dolls. We deeply regret this unfortunate error and are taking immediate action to remedy this.”
The dolls recalled on November 11, 2024, were sold primarily in the United States of America, and were no longer seen in stock on Amazon, Target, Walmart and even on Mattel’s official website.
However, Holly Ricketson claimed in her complaint that the company should have never released the doll before checking every minute detail. Through the lawsuit, the complainant seeks $5 million for damages, as the plaintiff sued the company for negligence, selling products unfit for sale, and violating California consumer protection laws.
At the same time, the company has not yet spoken up about the lawsuit.
For the unversed, the dolls by the company were inspired by the characters of Wicked, which was released in the country on November 22, 2024, after a premiere at the State Theatre, Sydney in the same month. The second part of the film will be released next year, in November.
