Katy Perry and John Mayer were part of an on-and-off relationship during the early days of the Firework songstress' career, beginning right after she divorced Russell Brand.

Perry and Mayer dated for a year and a half, and it was reported that they broke up three times during their relationship before finally bidding adieu to each other in the summer of 2015.

The two have opened up about each other several times in the past. Katy Perry famously ranked John Mayer as the best lover among her exes. The Roar singer was asked to rank her exes from best to worst in bed in a 2017 appearance on James Corden's The Late Late Show.

Choosing between Diplo, Orlando Bloom, and John Mayer, she placed the latter on top of the pile.

"They're all amazing lovers, and I would have s*x with all of them after I get out of this place," she declared.

But when pushed, she named Diplo third, recent ex Orlando Bloom as second, and gave Mayer (whom she dated on and off between 2012 and 2015) the top spot.

However, she patched up with Orlando Bloom soon after the interview, and the two are engaged at present.

In a June 2017 interview with Rolling Stone, John Mayer addressed Katy Perry's remarks, saying:

"I don't have a cool-enough thought for you."

Mayer continued, saying:

"I've hacked this game. I pay very little of the price of fame now. I get to play the music that moves me the most. I'm having the time of my life. I'm 39 — I remember 32. I don't wanna do it again."

According to a report by E! News, the duo first met in 2009 at a Jay-Z afterparty. After their first meet, Katy Perry and John Mayer didn't interact for a long time as the former went on to marry Russell Brand.

However, their marriage didn't last long and ended in a divorce on December 30, 2011.

After her divorce, Katy Perry reconnected with Mayer and the two became pen pals before officially coming out as a couple. In 2013, Katy Perry and John Mayer also recorded a track called Who You Love for Mayer's 2013 album Paradise Valley.

Talking about the romance in the music video for the song, Mayer told ABC News:

“It’s just so authentic.”

Katy Perry added:

“There’s nothing scripted in that video except putting a bull in the middle of the desert. Relationships are kind of like riding a bull. You hang on for dear life and sometimes you get a little buck here and there but you get back on.”

Over the course of their relationship, Katy Perry and John Mayer broke up several times. In one of the breaks in 2013, Perry opened up about her love for Mayer in an interview with Vogue.

“I was madly in love with him. I still am madly in love with him. All I can say about that relationship is that he’s got a beautiful mind. Beautiful mind, tortured soul. I do have to figure out why I am attracted to these broken birds,” she confessed.

Around the same time, Mayer spoke about the relationship in an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. He explained that their relationship was a private affair and described his dynamic with Katy Perry as a "tricky thing."

After being on and off for a long time, the couple finally called it a day in the summer of 2015. However, they opted to keep silent about their relationship status.

Although we don't know the exact reason for their break up, both had revealed titbits about their problems in the past.

For instance, John Mayer had previously alluded to Perry's aggressive work ethic, partying habits, and hectic tour schedule as difficult to keep up with.

Similarly, Perry had opened up about a previous split in a 2013 appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show.

“I realized I could lose the person I loved and I had to deal with some things, issues I think a lot of women have. You can be strong in one aspect of your life but submissive in another. In relationships, it was hard for me to speak up and set boundaries," she said.

The Roar songstress added:

"I think a lot of that was to do with the fear of loss. The men I have gone for are challenging, yes, but they’re also wildly intelligent and poetic. I’m not interested in taming anyone. I’m pretty wild myself."

At present, Perry is engaged to The Hobbit actor Orlando Bloom. The two first met while fighting over a burger at the Golden Globes ceremony in 2016 and have been together ever since. Bloom proposed to Katy on Valentines' Day in 2019.
