Jey Uso's Spear and two other moves are overused, ex-WWE star says

Jey Uso began performing the Spear regularly in WWE during his 2023 rivalry with Roman Reigns. In a recent video, former WWE star Stevie Richards explained why the move is no longer as special as it once was.

In 1997, Bill Goldberg popularized the Spear in WCW. Several wrestlers have adopted the move since then, including The Big Show, Bobby Lashley, Bron Breakker, Charlotte Flair, Edge, and Reigns. Rhyno's finisher, the Gore, is also a variation of the Spear.

On The Stevie Richards Show, Richards told host James Romero he understands the storyline logic behind Jey Uso stealing his cousin's move. However, he thinks the Spear has become as overused as the DDT and the Superkick:

"Now you got Jey Uso doing the Spear within the vein of working somebody within The Bloodline, but still," Richards stated. "His finish is a Splash, a Superkick. These are the things of a smaller guy. I can understand the Spear maybe out of desperation or a double-down to hit it, just to create distance and get the guy off you, catch your breath. But, at the same time, you're right, yeah, the DDT, the Spear, and the Superkick are the three. Those are the three that really need to be paired down and made special again." [12:19 – 12:55]

Richards also questioned whether wrestlers should continue performing a high-risk manoeuver that Austin Theory once retired from his WWE move set.

Stevie Richards breaks down Bill Goldberg's WWE Spear

On July 28, 2003, Bill Goldberg defeated Stevie Richards in a 72-second match on WWE RAW. The finish saw the WCW icon hit a Spear and Jackhammer on his opponent before securing a quick pinfall win.

Reflecting on his experience taking a Spear from Goldberg, Richards light-heartedly said he preferred receiving the move from Edge:

"Goldberg's Spear doesn't look fantastic. It's a real Spear [laughs]. I'm a worker. I prefer Edge's because he just kinda lets you snap and take the bump. [After receiving Goldberg's Spear] you're laying there already half knocked out going, 'Did the Spear happen?' and Goldberg's next to you knocked out because he planted his head right into the mat." In a previous episode, Richards expressed his surprise that Goldberg never broke his neck performing a Spear.
