Liverpool have expressed interest in signing former Manchester City youth product Jeremie Frimpong. According to German outlet Bild, the Reds are keen on the 23-year-old as a possible replacement for Trent Alexander-Arnold.
This comes as the Englishman is set to enter into the final stages of his contract at Anfield. He will become a free agent in the summer of 2025, with several reports claiming that a move to Real Madrid could be on the cards.
With talks of a renewal remaining unclear, Liverpool are now looking at alternatives. After leaving Manchester City to join Celtic in 2019, Frimpong spent two years with the Scottish giants before making the move to Bayer Leverkusen. He has excelled at right wing-back for Xabi Alonso's side, helping them complete an unbeaten domestic double last season.
Frimpong profiles as a major attacking threat from the full-back position, a playstyle that could suit Liverpool well. He has one goal and seven assists in 18 games across competitions this season.
Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan has echoed the thoughts of his manager Pep Guardiola in suggesting that Liverpool are currently well ahead in the title race. After the side's 4-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur over the weekend, Gundogan said (via the Mirror):
“To stay in the title race, probably yes, because 11 points would be a huge gap. It's still early in the season."
“There are still a lot of games to play and a lot of things can happen, not just on our side but at every other team. But obviously we have to look at ourselves and try to do the things we can do better, as quickly as possible. We take it, stay humble, head down and try to put in the work in the next few days and prepare as well as possible for a tough game."
“Anfield is always tough, no matter the situation. We've struggled in recent years going there and we know Liverpool are a great team full of confidence right now. It's going to be as tough as it is possible to be. But that sums up the situation right now. It seems we have to go through this season the toughest way possible.”
Both sides enter the fixture on contrasting runs of results. The Reds have looked impeccable, winning six on the bounce while City are winless in their last six games.
Liverpool now have an eight-point lead at the top over Manchester City heading into the pivotal clash at Anfield. Another win for Slot's men would all but end the defending champions' title hopes.
