Social media has reacted to Real Madrid's 2-0 loss to Liverpool in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday, November 27. The Reds looked like they were always going to win, especially with Los Blancos struggling to find their clinical edge in the final third.
Despite the first half finishing goalless, Darwin Nunez nearly beat Thibaut Courtois early in the game (5'). Raul Asensio almost put the rebound into his own net but cleared off the line.
Early in the second half, brilliant link-up play with Conor Bradley led to the first goal through Alexis Mac Allister (52'). Real Madrid looked like they might turn the game around as Andrew Robertson tackled Lucas Vazquez inside the box. Kylian Mbappe, however, missed the penalty, with Caoimhin Kelleher guessing correctly (61').
Barely nine minutes later, there was a penalty on the other end as Mohamed Salah was brought down by Ferland Mendy. However, the legendary Egyptian put his foot through it and missed the net entirely (70').
But the second goal came six minutes later after a quick corner saw the ball lofted for Cody Gakpo in the six-yard box. The Dutchman headed into the top corner to double the lead (76').
The game ended with Liverpool as deserving winners, while Real Madrid returned empty-handed. Fans took to social media to react to the game with comments like:
"Sell Mbappe in January," a fan demanded.
"Manchester City fans won't like this result" another added.
"Arne Slot. 19 games. 17 wins. 1 draw. 1 L. 89.47% win percentage." another fan praised the Reds manager.
"It’s truly sad that Klopp retired during the worst performances of Real Madrid and Man City," this fan was nostalgic.
"Liverpool best team in the world, I am the happiest man in the world, Finally Since 2009. Wow," this fan was ecstatic about beating Real Madrid.
"I don’t want to hear anyone defending mbappe again," an angry fan added.
"whole team playing backwards no mentality no leadership on the pitch just passing backwards," a Madridista was displeased.
Arne Slot shared the half-time team talk he had with the Liverpool players that helped them secure an impressive win over Real Madrid.
Speaking to the press after the 2-0 win, he said (via Standard):
“I felt that we were a bit too impatient. So I said: ‘I think there’s more in you guys than you show at the moment. You can play with more intensity and better with the ball. Forget the shirt that you face, just do what you always do and hopefully we can create more chances than we did in the first half.’”
The Reds listened and turned out in the second half to create more chances. Indeed, in the first half, they had six shots at goal, but in the second, they had 11 shots at goal.
Slot will be pleased that Liverpool are in brilliant form ahead of their upcoming Premier League match against Manchester City at Anfield on Sunday, December 1.
