Fans have ripped into Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes on social media after he was sent off in their Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers. The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 defeat at the Molineux on Boxing Day (December 26).
Fernandes was booked in the 18th minute for bringing down Matheus Cunha. Just two minutes into the second half (47'), the referee showed the Portuguese playmaker a second yellow card for a poor - and arguably needless - tackle on Nelson Semedo.
Soon after, Jørgen Strand Larsen had the ball in the back of Manchester United's net, but the goal was cancelled for offside (49'). The hosts broke the deadlock through a brilliant corner from Matheus Cunha, whose delivery flew straight into the back of the net (58'). Wolves added a late goal through Hwang Hee-chan (90+9') to seal the three points.
Before he was sent off, Bruno Fernandes was having a torrid game in midfield for the Red Devils. He won only three duels and lost 10, while committing two fouls, both of which saw him pick up yellow cards.
Fans were angry with his overall performance and his early exit, as they took to social media platform X with comments like these:
"Worst Captain in Man United history?" one fan asked.
"Absolutely, even Maguire and Young was miles ahead of this crybaby," a fan responded.
"3rd red card of the season? Unacceptable for our captain," a fan said.
"SELL HIM NOOOOOOW" a fan was wrote.
"We shall never get anywhere with him as our captain!" another claimed.
"Looks like Bruno's on a little vacation now! " another fan mocked.
Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has pushed Marcus Rashford to show leadership at the club. The academy graduate has openly spoken about potentially leaving Old Trafford in an interview after he was frozen out of first-team games.
The club are currently struggling, as they sit in 14th place on the Premier League table, having won just once in their last five games. Ruben Amorim believes that players like Rashford need to step up and show leadership. He spoke about the 27-year-old winger in an interview with Sky Sports (via The Guardian):
“Some guys have a big responsibility here because they are here for a long time. This is maybe one of the lowest moments in our club... If you have big talent [produce a] big performance, take a big responsibility, have big engagement, push forward everybody in this moment.”
Manchester United will face Newcastle United at Old Trafford before the year ends on December 30.
