The story of the feared Mafia underboss Sammy Gravano, infamously known as The Bull, will be the topic of exploration on HBO Max's Sons of Ecstasy which premiered today on the streaming site.

Sammy belongs to the Gambino crime family and when his status was raised to that of underboss, he found himself facing a lengthy jail sentence following a police crackdown. Despite the nature of his crimes, he was presented with a plea deal that significantly reduced his sentence

Following his release in 1994, Sammy Gravano relocated with his family to start a new life. But he soon found himself roped into the life of crime when he got embroiled in the ecstasy drug trade in Arizona which got him another sentence of 20 years behind bars.

Gravano is now finally out of prison for good. He lives in Phoenix and even hosts a podcast.

Who is Sammy Gravano and where is he now?

Salvatore “Sammy” Gravano rose to power as the underboss of John Gotti, the infamous and much-feared mob boss who led one of America's most powerful mob families. After a police crackdown that led to his arrest, Sammy was offered a plea deal despite confessing to 19 mob-related murders.

He testified against Gotti in exchange for a five-year sentence. Following his conviction, John Gotti died of cancer in a Missouri prison hospital in June 2002 and Sammy Gravano found himself embroiled in another criminal activity.

Following his release in 1994, Gravano relocated with his family under witness protection to start a new life. But it was not long before he ditched his new alias and returned as The Bull to a life of crime.

Gravano and his family found themselves at the center of the ecstasy drug trade in Arizona, which also brought to Sammy a new rival, an English stockbroker Shaun Attwood. This landed him a 20-year prison sentence.

Sammy Gravano was arrested in February 2000 in Arizona and he pleaded guilty to drug trafficking charges in Arizona and New York in May 2001. He was finally released in September 2017 from a Colorado prison but will be on federal parole for the rest of his life.

Sammy Gravano is 79 years old now and lives in Phoenix. He does not shy away from speaking about his life and has given interviews to numerous news outlets.

The ex-Mafia boss even hosts a podcast called Our Thing with Sammy The Bull which is in its fifth season now. He has an active life and describes himself as the Don of social media.

Gravano even has a YouTube channel where he regularly uploads and is active on social media sites where he promotes and sells merchandise.

Sons of Ecstasy charts the rise and fall of mafia legend Sammy Gravano, bringing to us details on how he got himself associated with the trading of party pills. In an interview with The Mirror, Sammy Gravano says:

"It was a trial of errors. One after another. We were doing other things, and more or less, we were duped into it, and I really had no interest in it. [Viewers] will see the entire story and how the original story that came out with the press and the people involved was exaggerated tremendously."

The former mafia boss claimed that he was into the construction business after coming out of prison the first time and it was only by chance that he and his family were roped into the drug trading business.

HBO's Sons of Ecstasy will bring to viewers the detailed story of the Gravano family's involvement in the drug business and the rivalry it started with Shaun Atwood, which eventually led to the arrest of the whole family.
