The first two episodes of Disclaimer constantly move back and forth between the past and present. Through several flashbacks, Jonathan's past trip to Italy is shown. There, he met a young Catherine who was there with her 4-year-old son Nicholas. Her husband, Robert, had to leave to take care of something at home.

As the story progresses, it becomes clear that Catherine and Jonathan had an affair back then. It is also suggested that Jonathan died shortly after, and Catherine lied to the police about the cause of his death.

In the present, the late Jonathan's elderly father, Stephen Brigstocke, is grieving over the death of his son and wife. One day, he comes across a manuscript containing a novel named The Perfect Stranger, penned by his late wife Nancy. He also finds a series of photos showing Catherine posing for the camera in various stages of undress.

The photos were clicked by Jonathan, and it is understood that Nancy discovered them, piecing together what happened between her late son and Catherine in Italy. The Perfect Stranger essentially recreates that period of Jonathan's life.

The joyous atmosphere with which the series premiere begins is soon punctured when Catherine receives a copy of Nancy's book. She can easily identify herself as a character in the book, and as she is reminded of the past, her present life comes tumbling down.

The title of the series comes from the disclaimer at the beginning of The Perfect Stranger, which ominously states that any resemblance to real characters is not coincidental. Stephen is behind this psychological game.

By the end of Disclaimer episode 2, Robert gets a mail from Stephen containing the compromising photos of Catherine. When he confronts her about the pictures, she tries to justify her extra-marital relationship. This response disgusts Robert, and he leaves the house.
