Apple TV+ original Where's Wanda? deals with the mysterious disappearance of a young girl, whose family decides to go the extra mile to find their loved one. Along the way, they twist and bend a few laws in the pursuit of Wanda Klatt.
Meanwhile, we learn that Lea Drinda, who plays Wanda Klatt, is in the custody of Chris (Aaron Maldonado Morales), who was tasked to kill her in the Apple TV+ original, but refused to do so. Over time, something akin to a friendship develops between the two, which blossoms into something more.
We spoke to Wanda herself, Lea Drinda, about the complicated relationship between her character and her kidnapper in the Apple TV+ show. Inspired by Aubrey Plaza and Adam Sandler, one can immediately see where her comedic chops come from!
Chris is ordered to kill Wanda but refuses to do so, and locks her up in a basement, taking good care of her. German actress Lea Drinda mentioned the turning point for her character:
"I think just the fact that so many days and so many weeks and months passing and him taking consideration of her feelings and her situation as well, and not just taking care of his own needs but also trying to make it comfortable for her."
Even though Chris is mixed up with some bad guys, he is not bad at heart. He goes out of his way to make Wanda Klatt feel at ease, even if she's in captivity. Drinda added:
"Because he makes the room nice for her, he brings her her favorite food, he is very respectful and he is never treating her as if he actually wants to do anything bad to her. He’s always just trying to somehow manage this very complicated situation."
She continued:
"And does it in such a nice way that it’s fairly obvious that at some point that you have to just accept the fact that the situation is not great, but the guy is actually a pretty good guy."
Could Lea Drinda, the actor, fall in love with her captor in a similar situation? With a laugh, she does not rule it out:
"(Laughs) I don’t really think it’s something that you consider. There’s no way to know what’s going to happen if you’re in that kind of situation. You never know. Love comes in very strange ways. You’re probably never really prepared for it. Just catches you. And if you take it you can. And if you don’t, you don’t."
The star of the Apple TV+ series, which mixes comedy and a serious topic in equal measure, opened up on how romance blossoms between kidnapper and kidnapped:
"And in that case, they just met in very strange circumstances. But somehow matched enough to somehow make it happen. (Laughs)"
Where's Wanda? stars an all-star cast, including Leo Simon, Axel Stein, and Heike Makatsch as the Klatts, and Nikeata Thompson as Detective Michelle Rauch, who is hot on the trail of the missing Wanda Klatt.
