CM Punk made an earth-shattering return on WWE SmackDown to join Roman Reigns' team for the Men's WarGames Match at Survivor Series 2024. The Voice Of The Voiceless was introduced by long-time friend and collaborator Paul Heyman to a raucous ovation, proceeding to help the OG Bloodline clear the ring of Solo Sikoa and his team.

Amidst all the excitement, there were some, including Roman Reigns, questioning why The Second City Saint was the fifth man for his crew. There are a number of reasons why it makes sense from the Chicago native's standpoint, but it also fits in the broader perspective of the product. One could argue that the former AEW World Champion was the perfect piece to complete this puzzle.

Let's look at four perspectives from which CM Punk is the perfect choice as the fifth member of Roman Reigns' team for WWE Survivor Series: WarGames:

#4: The Paul Heyman perspective: Why CM Punk is helping the Wiseman at WWE Survivor Series

CM Punk and Paul Heyman share a long on-screen history in WWE. The duo have been both allies and enemies, creating many moments alongside and opposite each other. The last time they shared the ring, Heyman had begged The Second City Saint, "Take me with you", when Solo Sikoa was growing ever more dangerous and with Roman Reigns AWOL.

Having been "abandoned" by his Tribal Chief even after taking a stand against the new leader, The Wiseman could have reconnected with old allies. With The Beast "out doing Brock Lesnar things" (in Triple H's words), Punk was the perfect answer to Heyman's prayers. Now, he can be of service to the Anoa'i family without forgiving the OTC, who left him in the cold.

It's an elegant way to pay off those story threads and create intrigue regarding Heyman's standing with two of his iconic allies

#3: The Bloodline perspective: Why CM Punk makes sense as an ally to the OG Bloodline and enemy to the new iteration at WWE Survivor Series

The aforementioned promo segment in June 2024 saw Solo Sikoa and his Bloodline confront CM Punk, only to be warded off by Cody Rhodes entering the fray with a steel chair in hand. However, that was not before Sikoa exchanged words with The Second City Saint, demanding acknowledgment. The Chicago native dismissed the notion, labeling Sikoa as a "Cosplay Tribal Chief" and the Tongans "fake-a** Uces."

Given this history with the new Bloodline, Punk was bound to come face-to-face with them sooner rather than later. Having also previously battled the likes of Umaga and Reigns himself, he has a long history with the family. It's worth noting that Heyman claimed that the OTC agreed to not go after Punk at his request, which would explain his decision to form a loose alliance with the OG Bloodline.

The Voice of The Voiceless may not acknowledge either chief, but he clearly affords the OTC more goodwill and respect.

#2: The Shield and Survivor Series perspective: Why standing with Roman Reigns in WarGames fits into CM Punk's WWE career narrative

Here are some facts about CM Punk's WWE career, The Shield and Survivor Series. The legendary trio debuted at the 2012 edition of The Thanksgiving Spectacle in a match involving Punk. He then employed their services as his enforcers, then feuded with them as a group before leaving the company. After joining AEW in 2021 return, he feuded with Jon Moxley over the World Title.

He later returned to WWE at, you guessed it, Survivor Series and the first man to get in his way was none other than Seth 'Freakin' Rollins. Now, with Roman Reigns, the latest legendary "Paul Heyman Guy", in need of an ally, The Second City Saint gets a chance to not just continue his history with The Hounds Of Justice but also compete in WarGames for the first time.

For long-time fans of The Shield and the man who allegedly came up with the idea for the group, his latest creative direction fits perfectly into their intertwined stories. But wait! If you look deeper, there's more.

#1: The Seth Rollins perspective: How CM Punk teaming up with Roman Reigns at WWE Survivor Series: WarGames affects The Visionary

Before CM Punk's return to join Roman Reigns' WarGames team, Seth Rollins was the frontrunner for that spot. After failing to recruit Bron Breakker, LA Knight, and more, the OG Bloodline turned to The Visionary as their last hope, appealing to his Shield connections with the OTC. Rollins turned them down, though, vowing never to stand with Reigns again despite Bronson Reed being on the other team.

Given Punk's history with The Architect and the continued teases of a feud, what better way to amplify tensions than to have the Second City Saint take his place? The five-time World Champion is unlikely to take too well to The Best In The World's decision, which could facilitate a heel turn on his part. Would CM Punk miss a chance to help Paul Heyman AND get in the head of Seth Rollins in one move?

One would think not!
