Michael Cole rightfully mentioned a non-WWE event that happened on New Year's Day involving two key superstars from the sports entertainment juggernaut. It was quite reflective of the current partnership in place that has been appreciated by many.
Two WWE Superstars went to Japan right at the end of 2024 for a big event on January 1, 2025. That event was NOAH: The New Year 2025, which saw The Nigerian Giant Omos capture the GHC Tag Team Titles from two legends - Naomichi Marufuju (who Omos pinned) and Takashi Sugiura. Meanwhile, United States Champion Shinsuke Nakamura also had a special match as he defeated the 35-year-old Ulka Sasaki.
Michael Cole ensured to mention the fact that Nakamura wrestled at the NOAH event and namedropped it as well.
Not only this but on SmackDown this week, Shinsuke Nakamura faced Andrade in a non-title match - if Andrade won, he would have earned a US Title shot. However, he ended up losing that match.
What was interesting was that during the bout, Michael Cole also mentioned the history that Nakamura and Andrade had when wrestling for the IWGP Intercontinental Championship a decade ago.
It's good to see WWE acknowledging promotions outside and how their histories are at least somewhat tied together.
