Babygirl is an upcoming erotic thriller written and directed by Halina Reijn. It is slated to release on December 25, 2024. Starring Nicole Kidman, Harris Dickinson, Antonio Banderas, and Sophie Wilde, the film explores themes of power, vulnerability, and relationships in a corporate environment.
Principal photography for the film began in December 2023 and wrapped in February 2024. The movie was entirely shot in New York City. The city’s mix of iconic landmarks and modern corporate spaces was central to the film’s narrative, providing a realistic setting for the high-powered world of its protagonist, Romy Mathis, a successful CEO.
New York City served as the sole filming location for Babygirl. The production team utilized various parts of the city, from bustling Manhattan skyscrapers to quieter residential areas.
Office interiors and luxury apartments were chosen to reflect the professional and personal lives of the main characters. In an interview with Filmmaker magazine Babygirl's cinematographer, Jasper Wolf, spoke about shooting the movie in A24's actual office, he said:
"It proved to be tricky to find the right location for the office scenes. We had a clear vision of what we wanted, but it was hard to find a location that could match that. When A24 just moved offices in New York, it was tempting to shoot there. From a productional and logistic standpoint it would be very advantageous. We were also charmed by the identity of this office space, so ultimately it all came together quite nicely."
The city’s corporate culture was particularly important in depicting the dynamics of Romy’s relationship with her much younger intern, Samuel. The production reportedly completed filming within three months.
Babygirl explores the themes of power, desire, and control. The film follows Romy Mathis (Nicole Kidman), a high-ranking CEO in New York City, as she becomes involved in a complicated relationship with a younger intern, Samuel (Harris Dickinson).
The story examines how their relationship disrupts Romy’s carefully curated professional and personal lives, as well as the consequences it has on her marriage to Jacob Mathis (Antonio Banderas) and her bond with her daughters.
The film also goes into broader issues surrounding gender, power dynamics in the workplace, and societal expectations.
In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter on August 20, 2024, Halina Reijn shared that she drew inspiration for the film from 1980s and 1990s erotic thrillers such as Basic Instinct and Indecent Proposal. The Dutch director, known for exploring themes related to women’s autonomy, sought to balance the psychological tension of the story with a realistic portrayal of workplace and familial relationships.
The cast of Babygirl is led by Nicole Kidman as Romy Mathis, a powerful CEO grappling with the complexities of her personal choices. Harris Dickinson plays Samuel, the young intern whose presence challenges Romy’s established world.
Antonio Banderas portrays Jacob Mathis, Romy’s husband, whose relationship with her becomes strained as the story unfolds. Sophie Wilde stars as Esme, Romy’s assistant, who witnesses the changing dynamics within their professional environment.
The film also features Esther McGregor and Vaughan Reilly as Romy and Jacob’s daughters, Isabel and Nora, respectively. Other supporting cast members include Gaite Jansen, Victor Slezak, Anoop Desai, and Dolly Wells.
