Rapper Drake recently called singer Steve Lacy a “fragile OPP” after xQc played Lacy's music on livestream. On November 25, Drake, also known as Drizzy, was featured on Canadian live-streamer xQc’s stream, where the latter played one of Lacy’s songs and asked for Drake’s opinion. In response, Drake said:

“This guy’s like a fragile opp, but this is a good song though.”

Steve Lacy is an American singer and songwriter known for his work in the R&B genre. He produces alternative R&B music with influences of indie rock and popfunk. According to High Snobiety, Lacy describes his music as “plaid music” with “a lot going on” and “all goes together to be one pattern.”

Lacy rose to fame while being a part of the alternative R&B band The Internet since 2015. In 2019, Lacy released his debut album, Apollo XXI, nominated for the Grammy Awards in the Best Urban Contemporary Album category. In 2023, Lacy won his first Grammy for his 2022 second studio album, Gemini Rights, in the Best Progressive R&B Album category.

In a 2022 interview with Variety, after being nominated for the 2023 Grammy awards in multiple categories, Steve Lacy explained that his “influences are vast.” He was asked how it felt to top the charts in multiple genres of music, including pop, rock, and alternative R&B. He responded:

“It’s really affirming. Because I’ve been playing with a bunch of different types of music for years, and my influences are vast. I’ve always been like, don’t box me.”

Lacy added:

“Even my first project had a rock song and an R&B song and an almost punk song. There’s been moments where I’m doubting if there’s even a place for this, and should I be more cohesive? Should I stick to one type of song or one genre? So, it’s beautiful to get acknowledged for all of it and realize that, damn, I didn’t have to change what I wanted to do. I didn’t have to dim my light.”

Steve Lacy rose to prominence when he joined the alternative R&B band The Internet in 2015. In the early years of his career, Lacy was also involved in the production of multiple popular albums and songs, working with artists such as Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, Twenty 88, and Denzel Curry.

He notably produced the track Pride from Lamar’s 2017 Grammy-winning album, Damn. Lacy also made two cameo appearances in Vampire Weekend’s 2019 album, Father of the Bride. Lacy also performed in Kendrick Lamar’s Pop Out Show in June this year.

In 2017, Lacy released his first extended play, Steve Lacy’s Demo. In April 2018, he dropped his first single, N Side, from his debut album, Apollo XXI, released in 2019. His debut album led him to receive his first Grammy nomination as a solo artist as he was nominated for the Best Urban Contemporary Album category in the 62nd Grammy Awards.

In his interview with Variety, Steve Lacy also revealed that he had had an accident in 2020, which served as “a wake-up call in some ways” before he began working on Gemini Rights, his second studio album. The singer felt that he had to take a “step back” to observe everything that took place over the years.

“I’m running away from my own divinity by just playing with music or these sketches, not taking it so seriously. I’m in my own way, almost,” Lacy said.

However, while staying away from music, Steve Lacy added that he felt like his back was “hitting the wall.”

“So, I started this process of telling the truth with honesty and transparency in my life. And then I was like, OK, like I want to go into the studio. When I found that flow, I was like, OK, this is where I need to be right now,” Lacy added.

In July 2022, the singer finally released his second studio album, Gemini Rights. The song Bad Habit from the album became Lacy’s first track to reach the No. 1 spot in the Billboard Hot 100. He won a Grammy Award for Gemini Rights in the Best Progressive R&B Album category. Lacy has not released any new music since then.
