Elizabeth Finch was a former Grey's Anatomy writer who was blacklisted from the show. This was after it was revealed that all her claims of having a rare bone were complete deception and misleading. In 2014, while working on the show, the writer wrote a series of essays describing her medical struggles.

In her essays, Finch stated that she was diagnosed with Chondrosarcoma, an extremely rare bone cancer. Her additional claims included losing a kidney, having an abortion due to chemotherapy, and undergoing a knee replacement due to misdiagnosis. Finch also claimed that she was abused by her brother as a child and then by her coworkers on the filming sets.

In March 2022, her ex-partner, Jennifer Beyer, exposed all her claims as false. After months of investigation, in December 2022, the writer confessed guilty to her crimes. Elizabeth Finch is currently a Los Angeles, California, resident and still wishes to return to the screen.

On September 17, 2024, Peacock announced they had commissioned a three-part documentary series, narrating the events relating to the Elizabeth Finch controversy. The Anatomy of Lies docu-series is based on journalist Evgenia Peretiz's Vanity Fair scandal article on May 2, 2022. Directed and executively produced by Peretz and David Schisgall, the series premiered on October 15, 2024, on the streaming platform.

What is the story of Elizabeth Finch?

Elizabeth Finch was brought up in Cherry Hill, New Jersey, and shared her passion for crafting stories since childhood. She was brought up with an elder brother named Eric, her father Robert, and her mother Joan. In high school, she started writing her original scripts for plays, which received an elevated platform when she joined the University of Southern California.

Joan, Elizabeth Finch's mother, was diagnosed with cancer. Hence, she had primary knowledge about the disease, its symptoms, and its aftermath. Since childhood, Finch encountered her mother's suffering, which began to be highlighted in the theme of her works.

Finch started her screen career working as an assistant for television writers. She went on to write a short film, Looking for My Brother, released in 2006. In 2008, Finch was hired as a writer's assistant, where she worked until 2010. She then worked as a writer for two episodes of No Ordinary Family, then worked for IAMA Theatre Company, where she landed her major gig.

In 2012, Elizabeth Finch was hired as a writer for CW's Teen Supernatural drama series The Vampire Diaries. Her contribution to developing the story gave Finch the title "Vampire Girl." Finch joined the team of Grey's Anatomy in 2015, working as a writer and producer.

Before her exit from the series, she scripted 13 episodes, produced 172 episodes, and made a screen appearance as Nurse Elizabeth in season 15 episode 19, titled Silent All These Years.

Elizabeth Finch declared she inherited cancer from her mother

It was during the top point of her career when Finch publicly announced that she inherited the cancer gene from her mother. In 2014, she wrote and published an article in Elle Magazine postulating having an extremely rare type of blood cancer called Chondrosarcoma. She was given a position in the writer's room and created the character Dr. Catherine Avery based on her asserted personal experiences.

From then on, several articles were published in popular magazines, including The Hollywood Reporter, Elle, and Shondaland, all authored by Elizabeth Finch. In the articles, she claimed to go through an abortion for her chemotherapy, lost a kidney, and had to go through a knee replacement due to a wrong diagnosis.

Additionally, Finch also attested to being abused by her brother as a child and by an undeclared director on the sets of The Vampire Diaries. She received sympathy from the public, allowing her to receive deadline extensions, work accommodations, and extended leave. It was in 2021 when she stated that her abusive brother died by suicide.

Elizabeth Finch was all over the media, making appeals to the public, attending interviews and events, and advocating her struggle of working as a cancer patient. However, things took a sharp turn for Finch in March 2022, when her ex-partner, Jennifer Beyer, contacted Shondaland and Disney, exposing the string of lies surfaced by the writer.

Upon investigation, Finch refused to provide official documentation from her medical history or undergo any medical evaluation to prove her claims. Later that year, in December 2022, Finch accepted deceiving the public and lying about her personal and medical history.

Finch's ex-partner, Jennifer Beyer, is a registered nurse. The couple married in February 2020, but their relationship suffered distress during the pandemic. While Beyer was surfing through Finch's social media page, she observed certain dissimilarities.

Fich claimed that she cleaned her friend's remains from the 2018 Tree of Life synagogue mass shooting. But Beyer noticed that during the same time Finch posted photos of being not in Pittsburgh but partying somewhere else. She also noticed that the writer posted a photo of herself showing a bandage above the chemotherapy port of her chest. But Beyer never noticed any wounds or scars in that area.

In a conversation with Time, published on October 15, 2024, Evgenia Peretz said all of Finch's lies were motivated by a thirst for attention. In December 2022, during a conversation with The Ankler, Elizabeth Finch accepted that what she did was completely wrong.

"What I did was wrong. Not OK. F**ked up. All the words… I was cut off pretty quickly from everything [following my administrative leave and ensuing resignation.] I slowly started to see people blocking me on Instagram and other social media. It was so universal that I don't know if an email went out or everyone just got together and decided 'no thank you.'"

Elizabeth Finch currently lives in Los Angeles, California, and still wishes to work for the industry. She claims that her desire to be seen and cared for came from the abuse she sustained as a child and on the sets. Finch hopes that if she is provided another chance in the industry, she can work her way up because this is where she wants to be. No updates on her return to the industry have been confirmed yet.
