Once good friends, Johnny Gargano and Alex Shelley are now at odds. In fact, the 37-year-old Gargano recently sent a message to Shelley, informing him of the shift in their dynamic.
Things haven't exactly been peachy between Gargano and Shelley. At one point, Johnny Wrestling looked up to The Motor City Machine Guns star, who mentored him. However, all that changed recently.
Two weeks ago on SmackDown, Johnny Gargano delivered a low blow to Chris Saban, costing the Machine Guns the WWE Tag Team Championships. Following the match, Gargano showed no remorse as he embraced the personality his tag partner, Tommaso Ciampa, had been wanting from him.
This carried over to last week, when Gargano and Alex Shelley went head-to-head. As expected, the former came out on top thanks to Ciampa's interference. While heading backstage, he sent his former mentor a message, which was shared on WWE's Instagram, reminding him that they used to have a student-teacher relationship, but now he was "the principal."
"If he's the teacher and I'm the student, and I just beat him, that makes me the principal baby! My school now!" said Johnny Gargano.
It is an interesting analogy from the three-time tag team champion. But, hopefully, it is not one he comes to regret.
The obvious betrayal from two weeks ago aside, there is another reason why Johnny Gargano and Alex Shelley's match was highly anticipated. But Gargano wasn't invested until he heard an interesting promo. It became personal for him after Shelley questioned his manhood.
In a hilarious segment backstage, Gargano could be seen talking to Tommaso Ciampa. They joked about how this grudge match made no sense, as it wouldn't allow The Motor City Machine Guns to win back the titles. But, more importantly, they didn't understand how Johnny's manhood could be questioned, seeing as he made a kid.
"He wants his payback on me. I understand that. But, you know, he wants to challenge my manhood? I'm all man! I made a kid okay!" exclaimed Gargano.
It's great to see DIY back at the top as tag team champions. They're incredibly entertaining and masters of tag team offense to boot. Their current reign will be fun to watch.
