Real Madrid fans have blasted Ferland Mendy on X after he put in a poor performance in their 2-0 defeat against Liverpool. The two sides faced off in the UEFA Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday, November 27.
The first half had a fairly slow tempo with both sides being careful not to overextend themselves. However, Liverpool looked the better side following the break and were rewarded in the 52nd minute via Alexis Mac Allister's excellent finish into the bottom-left corner.
Real Madrid received a lifeline when Andy Robertson fouled Lucas Vasquez in the box minutes later to concede a penalty. However, Caoimhin Kelleher made a great save to deny Kylian Mbappe (61').
The Reds launched a counter-attack in the 70th minute with Luis Diaz playing Mohamed Salah through. The latter cut left, before turning the other way, leading to Mendy bringing him down in the box. However, Salah's penalty struck the woodwork to spare the Frenchman's blushes. Liverpool's dominance paid off in the 76th minute as Cody Gakpo's header ensured they sealed all three points.
Mendy struggled at left-back and was immediately subbed off for Fran Garcia after conceding the penalty. The 29-year-old lost three duels, made zero clearances, and created no chances for Real Madrid going forward.
