Real Madrid have been dealt an injury blow as midfielder Eduardo Camavinga had to be subbed off after picking up a knock against Liverpool. This happened during the Reds' 2-0 win over Los Blancos in the Champions League at Anfield on Wednesday, November 27.
The midfielder has been dealing with injury concerns over the past year. In November 2023, he tore his lateral knee ligament, which kept him out until January 2024. Knee issues continued this season, as he was out of contention from mid-August until late September 2024.
Now, another injury has affected the midfielder, who was tracking back to defend a counter-attack in the 56th minute. He was unable to chase after the player he was marking, suddenly falling to the turf and holding onto his leg. Daniel Ceballos replaced the Frenchman in the 57th minute.
Camavinga has been an important player for Real Madrid this season, playing eight games in all competitions and providing one assist from his deep-lying role. He has played 522 minutes so far, but it does not seem like he will add to this in the near future.
Ahead of their match against Liverpool, Carlo Ancelotti spoke about the injury concerns the club have faced so far this season. It is worth noting that a number of players are unavailable, including Vinicius Jr, Eder Militao, Lucas Vasquez, Rodrygo, and others.
The Real Madrid manager said (via Madrid Universal):
"In three months, Madrid has had 11 muscle injuries. Is there anything else? Yes, but we have also had seven defeats. Avoiding this is complicated. It is difficult, because it is not only Madrid’s problem, but also other teams."
“Each team handles these things in their own way, but what does not change are the injuries. We have to put up with this."
He concluded:
“We have to think like last year, that injuries are an opportunity to be better. It is no coincidence that the injuries of Lucas, Militao, and Rodrygo have changed the dynamic of the team."
Ancelotti claimed that the congestion in the fixture list is leading to more injuries. He added:
"The player is professional and serious and he is not going to take any risks. We value those who returned from the national team and Vinicius, like Valverde, were in good shape and that’s it."
“Then, sometimes it happens that the player gets injured. Why? We already know. Because there are too many games."
Carlo Ancelotti notably led Real Madrid to the UEFA Champions League title last season, despite the club dealing with injuries. The legendary manager will hope he can do it once more.
